Xabier Fernández Gaztañaga (born October 19, 1976 in Ibarra ) is a Spanish sailor .
successes
Xabier Fernández took part in the Olympic Games three times with Iker Martínez in the 49er dinghy . In 2004 they finished the regatta in Athens in first place in front of the Ukrainian and British boats. You became Olympic champion with 67 points . At the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008 they prevailed against three other boats in the final medal race in order to achieve second place behind the Danes Jonas Warrer and Martin Kirketerp and thus win the silver medal. In London they did not get past 12th place four years later . After a silver medal in 2001 in Malcesine Fernández and Martínez were in the 49er dinghy 2002 Kāne'ohe , 2004 in Athens and 2010 in Freeport each champion . In addition, between 2002 and 2008, the two became three European champions together.
In the Volvo Ocean Race 2017-2018 he was the skipper of the yacht Mapfre , which took second place. He had already been a crew member on the boat from 2014–2015 and had achieved fourth place. He was also a participant in the regatta from 2005-2006 ( movistar ) and 2008-2009 ( Telefonica Black ). In 2011, the World Sailing Association recognized Fernández and Martínez as World Sailors of the Year .
