Peter Burling , MNZM (born January 11, 1991 in Tauranga ) is a New Zealand sailor .

successes

Peter Burling took part in three Olympic Games . In 2008 he started in Beijing together with Carl Evans in the 470 dinghy and finished the competition in eleventh place. Four years later he started with Blair Tuke in the 49er dinghy . Burling and Tuke finished the regatta behind the Australian and in front of the Danish crew in second place, with which the two won the silver medal. At the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , he and Blair Tuke managed to outperform the 2012 Games. This time they finished first with a larger margin ahead of the Australians Nathan Outteridge and Iain Jensen and received the gold medal as Olympic champions . At the opening ceremony of the Games, he and Tuke were the flag bearers of the New Zealand delegation.

At world championships , he and Blair Tuke won the title six times with the 49er dinghy between 2013 and 2020. In 2011 and 2012 the two took second place. He won the America's Cup with Team New Zealand in 2017 . He acted as the helmsman of the New Zealand crew.

In 2015, the World Sailing Association named Burling and Tuke World Sailor of the Year . In 2017 Burling was again recognized as such, but this time alone. At the end of 2016, like Tuke, he was appointed a member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for his Olympic success .
