Petra Majdič (born December 22, 1979 in Ljubljana , SFR Yugoslavia ) is a former Slovenian cross-country skier .

Athletic career

Petra Majdič lives in Brinje and started for SD Atrans Trojane . She started in more than 180 cross-country skiing world cup races and came on podium 33 times. She made her international debut in January 1998 at a European Cup race in Furtwangen , where she was 13th in a 5-kilometer race. In December of that year she reached her first podium in the European Cup as third in a 10-kilometer race in Goms . At the Junior World Championships in 1999 in Saalfelden , Majdič was sixth in the 5-kilometer race. In November 1999 she made her debut in Kiruna as 64th over 5 kilometers in the World Cup. Three months later, she won her first World Cup point in 30th place in the 10-kilometer race. A month later, she finished 20th in the 5-kilometer race in Bormio . In February 2001, Majdič reached third place in a sprint race in Asiago for the first time on the podium. In Lahti she took shortly after the first time at the Nordic World Ski Championships in part, finishing as the best finish a 14th place in the 15-kilometer race.

In 2002 Majdič took part in the Winter Olympics for the first time . At the races in Salt Lake City , she came seventh in the pursuit, eighth in the 10-kilometer race and ninth in the relay. At the military world championships after the Olympic Games in Kranjska Gora , she won the silver medal behind the French Karine Philippot . The Nordic World Ski Championships 2003 in Val di Fiemme again brought three placements among the top ten. In the following years, Majdič often achieved good, but rarely outstanding results. The Slovenian came back to the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin in good shape . At the races in Pragelato Plan , she was sixth in the 10-kilometer race and eighth in the sprint. Shortly after the World Cup, she won her first World Cup race with a sprint in Drammen . At the end of the season at the military world championships in Andermatt , she again won the silver medal behind Philippot.

The 2006/07 season was also very successful . In Kuusamo and Stockholm she won two World Cup sprint races, three more podium finishes and a stage win in the Tour de Ski 2006/2007 . She finished the overall World Cup in fourth, the Distance World Cup in eighth and in the Sprint World Cup she was second behind Virpi Kuitunen . At the Nordic World Ski Championships 2007 in Sapporo, Petra Majdič did well, as she won the silver medal behind Astrid Jacobsen in the sprint and was fifth over 30 kilometers. The following season she won three sprint world cups and came second twice. She finished the 2007/08 Tour de Ski in 18th place. At the end of the season she won the Sprint World Cup for the first time and came fifth in the overall World Cup. After 18th place over 10 km freestyle in Gällivare at the beginning of the 2008/09 season , she won the sprint in Kuusamo. She also won the following sprints in Davos and Düsseldorf . At the Tour de Ski 2008/09 , she came twice in second place and twice in third place, reaching third place overall. At the following World Cups in Otepää and Valdidentro she won the sprint and took third place over 10 km classic in Valdidentro. At the season highlight of the Nordic World Ski Championships 2009 in Liberec she achieved 15th place over 10 km classic, 12th place in sprint and ninth place in skiathlon . At the end of the season she won the sprints in Lahti and Trondheim . Also in Trondheim, she won her only distance World Cup victory in the 30 km mass start race. At the 2009 World Cup final , she was twelfth. She won the sprint stage in Stockholm. She finished the season in fifth place in the Distance World Cup, second place in the overall World Cup and first place, as in the previous year, in the Sprint World Cup.

At the beginning of the following season, Majdič won the sprint in Davos and finished second in Kuusamo and third in Rogla . The Tour de Ski 2009/10 she finished in second place. She won two sprint stages and the 10 km mass start stage. At the following World Cup in Otepää she was second in the sprint. As a leader in the sprint and second in the overall World Cup, Majdič came to the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver . While warming up for the first competition, the classic sprint, she lost control in a descent, fell down an embankment and hit a tree there. As it turned out later, she broke four ribs and pulled a tear in the lung membrane. Nevertheless, she started shortly afterwards with severe pain in the qualification, in which she was 19th. She finally made it to the final, where she finished third behind Marit Bjørgen and Justyna Kowalczyk . In the overall and in the sprint world cup, she reached third place. At the beginning of her final season 2010/11 she finished seventh at the Nordic Opening in Kuusamo. She was third over 5 km classic and second in the sprint. The Tour de Ski 2010/11 , in which she won both sprint stages, she achieved sixth place. At the World Cup in Otepää, she took her 16th and last World Cup victory in the sprint. At the 2011 World Championships in Oslo , she won the bronze medal in the sprint. In addition, she took 13th place over 10 km classic, seventh place with the relay and fifth place together with Katja Višnar in the team sprint. In March 2011 she was third in the World Cup sprint in Lahti . At the 2014 World Cup final , she came ninth. She won the sprint stage. At the end of the season, she won the Sprint World Cup for the third time and took sixth place in the overall World Cup.
