Donnie Liboon Nietes (born May 13, 1982 in Murcia , Philippines ) is a Filipino professional boxer, former WBO world champion in strawweight and light flyweight, former IBF world champion in flyweight, and current WBO world champion in super flyweight. He is also the boxer who has won the most World Cup fights and title defenses in the history of Philippine sports.

career

Donnie Nietes won his professional debut on April 25, 2003 against Walter Suaybaguio. In May 2004, he won the Filipino light flyweight championship against Joseph Villasis. His first and so far only defeat he suffered in September 2004 just on points against the two-time WBO World Championship challenger Angky Angkotta.

On November 24, 2006, he won the WBO's Asia-Pacific title in the strawweight division by knockout in the second round against the Indonesian Heri Amol and defended the title early against his compatriots Jadsada Polyiam and Saengpetch Sor Sakulphan.

With a record of 21 wins, one defeat and three draws, he boxed for the vacant WBO world strawweight title on September 30, 2007, defeating his compatriot Somporn Seeta (later WBA world champion) unanimously on points. He then defended the title against Eddy Castro (WBO # 9), Erik Ramirez (WBO # 2), Manuel Vargas (WBO interim world champion) and Mario Rodríguez (later IBF world champion). He also defeated the two-time WBA World Championship challenger Jesús Silvestre in a non-title fight.

From 2011 he boxed light flyweight and won on October 8 of the same year the WBO world title by a unanimous victory against the Mexican Ramón Hirales . In 2012 he defended the title against the Mexican Felipe Salguero (WBO # 7). In 2013 he successfully defended his title against Moises Fuentes and Samuel Gutiérrez.

In 2014 he defended the title again against Moises Fuentes and Carlos Velarde (WBO # 5). In 2015 he defeated Gilberto Parra , Francisco Rodríguez junior and Juan Alejo. He won his last title defense in May 2016 against Raúl García , former IBF and WBO world strawweight champion.

In September 2016 he boxed a flyweight against Édgar Sosa and won by unanimous decision, making him Intercontinental Champion of the WBO. In his next fight on April 29, 2017, he beat his compatriot Komgrich Nantapech and thereby won the vacant IBF world flyweight title. He became one of only seven Asian boxers who have won world titles in three weight classes. He defended the IBF title in February 2018 by knocking out in the seventh round against Juan Reveco , three-time WBA world champion in light fly and flyweight.

In April 2018 he resigned the IBF title to move up to super flyweight, where he fought against Aston Palicte for the vacant WBO world title on September 8, 2018 and reached a draw. However, he won the vacant title on December 31, 2018 on points against Kazuto Ioka , former world champion in three weight classes.

family

His uncles Dan Nietes, Junie Nietes and Gerson Nietes, as well as his cousin Gerson Nietes junior, were also boxers.
