Career

Fontana began her international career at the Junior World Championships in 2005 at the age of 14. There she did not reach the final in any race, but was nominated for the first time for the Short Track World Cup in October 2005 . Even if she never made it into an individual final in the 2005/06 season, she got good results with the Italian relay, once she was third on the podium.

The year 2006 began for Fontana with three major events. First she won a silver medal at the Junior World Championships, then she triumphed with the relay at the European Championships . There she was also able to secure two silver medals on the 500 m and 3000 m distance, she also won bronze over 1500 meters and was second in the all-round competition behind Evgeniya Radanova . Because of her good performance, Fontana was able to qualify for the Olympic Games in Turin , where she was the youngest Italian athlete to win a medal at these games. She achieved this together with Marta Capurso , Katia Zini , Mara Zini and Cecilia Maffei, who was not used, in the 3,000 m relay . Fontana also did well on the other routes, including sixth over 1000 meters. Because of the bronze medal, she was also awarded the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic .

After the Olympics, 2006 went well for Fontana, winning several medals with the team at the Team World Championship and winning bronze in the relay at the 2006 Short Track World Championship .
