Richard Cain (policeman)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Richard Scully Cain (born October 5, 1931 in Chicago , † December 20, 1973 ibid) was a corrupt police officer in Chicago and is considered a member of the Chicago Outfit , which is basically reserved for Italians and their descendants. At least he was an associate in the environment of the head Sam Giancana .

Life

Youth and criminal milieu

His father, John Cain, was of Irish-American descent, and his mother, Lydia, had Italian-American ancestry. He grew up in Chicago and after his parents divorced in 1938, he moved to Owosso , Michigan in 1939 . He learned the basics of five languages and also read books on laws. In 1947 he joined the US Army . In Fort Hood , Texas, he was trained as a radio operator and transferred to Japan for the first foreign assignment. He was then trained in military counter-espionage. When he resigned from the US Army on June 23, 1950, he called himself Richard Scalzetti or Sculzetti Cain. He was then hired by private detective John Buenz and lived with his family in Miami . From there he drove to Cuba several times .

He came into contact with the La Cosa Nostra family - the Chicago outfit - when he helped organize the hijacking of United Parcel Service trucks , using his position as head of security at the company until 1953. Although his grandfather, who was a well-known entrepreneur in the sewage industry, was murdered by the outfit in 1928, Cain later became a "made men" (i.e. full member of the outfit ) and known in mobster circles as Ricado Scalzetti .

It was alleged that Giancana suggested that he accept a position in the Chicago Police Department , where he served as a liaison between corrupt police officers and the Outfit from May 1956 . He pointed out also patrol duty in sub-districts of the police and took occasionally to fake raids on illegal casinos and betting shops of the Chicago Outfit in part.

Cain's dual role

In 1960 he was on leave from the police force to work as an investigator for the US Attorney Richard Ogilvie against the boss of the Chicago Outfit Anthony Accardo . On the other hand, he was officially suspended from duty on charges of bugging Mayor Richard J. Daley's security officer because the information made possible political action against the mayor.

As a devoted cop, Cain was trusted by Richard Ogilvie , whose knowledge of the Chicago Outfit's actions played a role in Accardo's conviction. After his stay in Mexico , he returned to Chicago in 1962 to assist Ogilvie in the campaign to become Sheriff of Cook County . After that he was active after his election from November 1962 as its operations manager in Cook County. In December 1964, Ogilvie released him after lying in court because he was involved in a stolen drug affair.

Cold War

Since October 1960 he worked as an informant for the CIA , interrogating Cuban refugees, among other activities. He wrote the reports with CIA agent William Lohman . When the CIA pursued the project of the murder of Fidel Castro , the connection to Cain was established through the Mafioso Johnny Roselli . But the plan to poison Castro failed in March 1961. As part of further Operation Mongoose projects , he is said to have trained Cuban exiles with Charles “Chuckie” Nicoletti and Felix “Milwaukee Phil” Alderisio for the Bay of Pigs invasion .

FBI informant and murder victim

Since he was convicted by the court of having participated in a Mafia action, he was sentenced in 1968 to 1 to 3 years in prison. In 1971 he worked again for Giancana to take on a central role as a money collector from the casinos in Central America and Iran. During this time he sought to gain control over illegal gambling in the cities. In 1969 he wrote to the FBI offering information.

At the same time he became an informant for FBI agent William F. Roemer . He allegedly ousted his mafia rivals by reporting their actions to the regulatory authorities. His half-brother even assumed he was planning to master the Chicago outfit . In the early 1970s he was involved in actions by the burglar ring of the Chicago Outfit , which was directed by Marshall Caifano . When Cain was in a Chicago store on December 20, 1973, a masked man approached him and killed him at close range with two headshots. It is believed that Caifano had knowledge of Cain's FBI contacts and was therefore commissioned by Anthony Accardo to murder Cain. Some investigators suspect that gangster Harry Aleman helped plan the murder.

Legends and rumors

Because of the diverse contacts and activities of Cain with the FBI, the CIA and the mafia, Cain is suspected in several conspiracy theories of being involved in the assassination attempt on John F. Kennedy . For example, in their 1992 book Double Cross: The Explosive, Inside Story of the Mobster Who Controlled America , Charles and Sam Giancana claim that Cain and Nicoletti, but not Lee Harvey Oswald, were present in the Texas School Book Depository on November 22, 1963 .

In 1996, the Brazilian journalist Claudia Furiati alleged that the author Eric Hamburg had claimed that Cain was involved in the Kennedy assassination with Dave Yarras and Lenny Patrick . This thesis was also represented by the author Peter Dale Scott in his book Bringing It All Together published in 1996 , referring to Cain's contacts with Johnny Roselli and John Martino .

These claims have been investigated by other investigators such as Larry Hancock and Michael J. Cain. The investigations did not reveal any conclusive evidence of Cain's involvement in the murder.

Adaptations

In his book The Godfather in the role of Al Neri, the author Mario Puzo was inspired by the life story of Cain. In 2007, Cain's half-brother Michael Cain published The Tangled Web , which is an extensive study of the life of Richard Cain.
