Kateřina Novotná (born August 12, 1984 in Benátky nad Jizerou ) is a Czech short tracker .

Career

Novotna's international career began in early 2000 when she competed in the Junior World Championships and the European Championships. Although she never reached a semi-final at either of the major events, she was nominated by the Czech Association for the Short Track World Cup in Heerenveen , where she also did not make it over the heat. In the 2000/01 season she was only used in one World Cup, the result of which was just as weak as the previous races. Only at the Junior World Championships 2001 did she make it into the semi-finals over 1500 meters.

In October 2001, Novotná was the only Czech short tracker to qualify for the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City . After missing a final run at the Junior World Championships again, she made it to the semi-finals of the Olympic short track competitions over 1500 meters. The international appearances in 2003 were limited to the three major events Junior World Championship, European Championship and Senior World Championship as well as a World Cup appearance. She never made it into a final.

It was not until the Junior World Championship in 2004 that Novotná was able to reach the final over 500 meters and even win silver there. With further good performances over the other routes, she also qualified for the super final of the overall best eight, which she finished sixth. She also won a bronze medal over 500 meters at the European Championships . In addition, she started for the first time in a 3000 m relay, with which she was eliminated in the run-up. This was because Novotná is the only Czech short tracker at most major events. At the World Championships and the World Cup, however, she still did not make it to the finals.

The 2004/05 season began again with little success for her in the World Cup, and she did not defend her medal at the European Championships either. At this year's Winter Universiade she made it to the finals over 3000 meters, but did not reach the finish line there. It was not until the last World Cup race of the season that she made it to the finals for the first time and narrowly missed the podium in fourth over 1500 meters. In the 2005/06 World Cup, Novotná only started in the third race, but once again she did not reach the final. Even at the major events, things did not look good for her at first, after she did not reach a final at the 2006 European Short Track Championships . Only at the Olympic Games was she able to convince and finish sixth over 500 meters.

Novotná started the 2006/07 World Cup season with a third place over 1500 meters at the first World Cup. Since her remaining results were also very consistent over this distance, she came fourth overall in the 1500 m World Cup. She also got several good results in the other disciplines. At the European Championships , she just missed a medal over 1500 meters in fourth and was ninth overall. At the World Cup, however, she did not reach the final again. The 2007/08 season was unsuccessful for Novotná in the World Cup, but she won a bronze medal over 1500 meters at the 2008 European Championship .
