Kipkemboi Kimeli
Kipkemboi Kimeli (born November 30, 1966 - February 6, 2010 in Albuquerque ) was a Kenyan long-distance runner .
Internationally, he made his first appearance at the 1985 World Cross Country Championships in Lisbon , when he won the junior race there. In order to earn money with the sport, he dared to step to Europe in 1987 with little more than the clothes he was wearing. From then on, Kimeli trained at USC Heidelberg under the care of Walter Abmayr . In the same year he won the Darmstadt city run in record time and defended this title the following year.
A short time later he achieved the outstanding success of his career at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul. In the 10,000 meter run , the then internationally still relatively unknown athlete won the bronze medal in a personal best of 27: 25.16 minutes behind Brahim Boutayeb (27: 21.46 minutes) and Salvatore Antibo (27: 23.55 minutes). After that, however, Kimeli did not have comparable results at international championships. Only at the World Cross Country Championships in Stavanger in 1989 did he finish eighth in the endurance race.
In the early 1990s Kimeli moved to Albuquerque, where he regularly participated in regional competitions. He died on February 6, 2010 of complications from pneumonia .
Kipkemboi Kimeli was 1.73 m tall and weighed 64 kg at competition times.
