Redmine is a free , web-based project management software . It can be used for user and project management, discussion forums, wikis , ticket management or document storage. Redmine is used in several large projects around the world , including the issue tracking system of the Ruby programming language and the TYPO3 developer portal .
The concept of Redmine was heavily influenced by Trac , a similar project management tool. Redmine is available for multiple platforms and databases, and for more than 45 languages. It is written in Ruby and uses the Ruby on Rails framework .
Functions
Redmine offers the following features:
- Project planning and management
- Redmine is a complete project planning and management tool. It enables the planning of a project down to the level of the individual tasks. Plugins exist to support different project procedures. Based on the issues, Gantt charts , project and appointment calendars, time reports (per user, activity, issue type and category) can be created automatically .
- Issue tracking system
- The built-in issue tracking system is based on freely selectable status and issue types. The workflow of the issues can be freely configured for each issue type and role.
- Wiki and discussion forum
- The wiki contained in Redmine is used to provide project wikis and discussion forums. The wiki is based on the simplified markup language Textile , which can also be used in tickets.
- Repository and access to version control systems
- The built-in repository is used to manage and version documents and files. In addition, Redmine enables access to different version management systems for each project in order to view or compare version statuses. The following version control systems are supported: Apache Subversion , CVS , Mercurial , Bazaar, and Git .
- Multi-tenancy
- Any number of projects, sub-projects and users can be managed within a Redmine installation. Users can have different authorizations and roles for each project. Roles, authorizations and workflows can be freely defined. Project modules ( Wiki , Repository , Issue Tracking System , ...) can be activated for each project. Dependent projects can be managed as sub-projects. Projects, users, tickets, etc. can be supplemented by freely configurable and then searchable or filterable fields.
- Authorization system
- Redmine's authorization system is role-based and freely configurable. It enables single sign-on via LDAP authentication to multiple LDAP instances. User accounts can be assigned automatically, but users can also optionally register themselves.
- News and notification system
- At project or user level, messages can be created, presented to other users and distributed via feed or mail. Automatic messages such as project activities, changes, news, tasks and their processing can be generated.
- Persistence
- Redmine stores its data in a database. The following database systems are supported: MySQL , PostgreSQL , Microsoft SQL Server , SQLite .
- Themes
- The appearance of Redmine can be changed almost at will using themes (also called skins or designs).
There are various Android apps that access functions of Redmine instances via the official REST API from Redmine. Apps are also available for iOS .
