OpenProject is a network-supported project collaboration system for cross-team and cross-location collaboration in projects. This open source application is published under the GNU General Public License Version 3 and is available in an Open Source Community Edition and a paid Enterprise Edition with extended functionality. The project is being continuously developed by the company OpenProject GmbH.

In addition to numerous smaller installations, there are also very large installations in large organizations with more than 2,500 projects.

Range of functions

OpenProject Foundation

The OpenProject Foundation was set up in October 2012 by developers and users of OpenProject. After the founding meeting of the association in April 2013, it was entered in the register of associations of the Charlottenburg District Court (VR 32487) in June. The association offers an organizational framework for technical decisions as well as the consolidation and acceleration of development by a full-time development team, financed by the members of the OpenProject Foundation.

The association has set itself the following goals:

  1. Establishing and promoting an active and open community, consisting of developers, users and companies, for the ongoing development of the open source project collaboration software OpenProject;
  2. Definition and further development of the project vision, the code of conduct and the application principles;
  3. Creation of development guidelines including ensuring compliance with them;
  4. Definition and further development of development and quality assurance processes;
  5. Making the source code available to the public;
  6. Provision and operation of the project platform.

Unlike the OpenProject GmbH company, the association does not pursue its own economic goals.

history

The open source project has been advanced in parallel with ChiliProject since 2010. In October 2012 the official fork took place under the name OpenProject. The reasons for the fork were the high load and security requirements desired by the founding members, which could only have been implemented and maintained insufficiently or with too much effort in Redmine and ChiliProject as a plugin, so

  • Protection against brute force attacks ,
  • Limitation of the session duration,
  • time limitation of the validity of passwords,
  • Definition of minimum requirements for the length and complexity of passwords.

These security and data protection requirements could be implemented during the first development phase.

Extensive legal requirements for accessibility were also met, which made profound adjustments to the user interfaces necessary, e.g. B. for the use of OpenProject by blind or motor-impaired users.

Current development and outlook

The current schedule and the development roadmap can be viewed and discussed on the development platform. The developer community has set itself the following development priorities:

Awards

In August 2011, OpenProject won first prize in the open source competition of the Berlin Technology Foundation “Berlin's future is open” in the “Best Practical Example” category.

In April 2018 OpenProject won the Innovation Prize IT 2018 of the Initiative Mittelstand in the Open Source category.

In October 2018 OpenProject won the Open Source Business Award (OSBAR, "OpenSource-Oscar") in silver.

Newsweek has listed OpenProject as one of the ten best project planning tools of 2019.
