Jessica Kürten (2008)

Jessica Kürten b. Chesney (born November 24, 1969 in Cullybackey , County Antrim , Northern Ireland ) is a former show jumper who was internationally successful for Ireland. As a native of Northern Ireland, she has both a British and an Irish passport. She is married to a German.

Career

Jessica Kürten grew up in a horse-loving family, her father was an obstacle rider and bred horses. In Ireland she was twice champion of pony show jumping, she also achieved this title in the junior age group. She has a diploma in equine management. In 1994 she moved to Germany, to Hünxe . Here she runs the “Chesney Farm” together with her husband.

In 2008 Kürten decided not to start at the Olympic Games in Hong Kong . Your horse Libertina should be given a longer break after an exhausting indoor season, after consultation with her patron. Her other top horse, Quibell , was also not eligible for participation in the Olympics for several reasons.

At the end of 2010, Jessica Kürten's main sponsor, who had provided her with horses for over eight years, withdrew her consent to ride her horses. The rider and the horse owner give different reasons for this. In April 2011 the horses were returned to the owner after a court settlement.

At the beginning of 2012, Kürten moved to Ferrières-en-Brie near Paris, where the Ferrières Castle was located . Here she trained Édouard de Rothschild , besides, she continued to devote herself to her horses. From March 2012 she worked here with the Irish dressage rider Judy Reynolds .

In spring 2014, Kürten reoriented itself: she and her husband moved to Mauren in Liechtenstein. Here she took over riding the horses from Paul Bücheler, who had previously made his horses available to Beat Mändli. Jessica Kürten ended her collaboration with Bücheler again in August 2014. As a result, Kürten rode stallions from the Dutch VDL Stud. With the CSI Zurich 2015 she ended her active equestrian career for the time being. She is now working as a trainer for other show jumpers. Jessica Kürten also works as a commentator for show jumping broadcasts on the online video platform FEI TV.

In 2006, Jessica Kürten was second in the FEI's show jumping world rankings for several months . In December 2010 she was ranked 14th in the world. By losing many of her previous competition horses, she slipped to 75th place in the world rankings by November 2011.

successes

In 1994 she reached tenth place with the horse Diamond Exchange in the individual ranking of the world championship of show jumping ( World Equestrian Games in The Hague ), with the team she came ninth. Two years later she was with the same horse 26th in the individual ranking of the Olympic Games in Atlanta , with the team she reached eighth place. In 1999 she reached with Paavo N at the European Championships in Hickstead 19th place in the individual and seventh place with the team. In 2001 she was able to celebrate the victory of the team classification of the European Championship in Arnhem with the Irish team , in the individual classification she reached 13th place with Bonita .

Penalty for illicit medication

During the European Championships 2007 it became known that the A-sample of the horse Maike used by Jessica Kürten at the Nations Cup tournament in La Baule tested positive for the substance etoricoxib, which is largely unknown in equestrian sports . Since it was a less serious substance, the proceedings could have been discontinued against a fine of 500 francs and repayment of the prize money. But since she was convinced of her innocence, she refuses. At the beginning of October 2007 she was informed that the B sample was also positive. In the following proceedings, Kürten's lawyer demanded that the proceedings be discontinued due to violations of the WADA regulations (the witness she had appointed was not allowed to attend the actual analysis of the B sample). In addition, it turned out that the doping laboratory had also analyzed the blood sample in addition to the (positive) urine sample without the knowledge of the defendant, but this sample was negative.

However, the FEI rejected all of Kürten's applications and sentenced them in May 2008 to a fine of 1,000 Swiss francs and a two-month start ban for illicit medication of the lowest level A. After the International Court of Justice for Sports (CAS) initially refused to postpone the sentence in June 2008, however, in a decision of July 10, 2008, it decided to temporarily lift the ban until the hearing. In mid-December 2008, the appeal was finally rejected by the CAS, leaving a remaining sentence of 21 days.

At the time the positive samples became known, Kürten was in a clinch with the Irish Equestrian Federation. Shortly before, she had refused to put her horse in the neighboring stable box for the horses of Irish rider Cian O'Connor , who lost his individual gold medal at the 2004 Olympic Games because of doping . A year earlier she had refused to start on a team with O'Connor. In 2006 she therefore decided not to start at the World Equestrian Games in Aachen .
