The Cheval de Selle Français (German: French Riding Horse, usually Selle Français for short ) is the most important French sport horse breed . It is mainly used for jumping . The breed was composed in 1958 from horses of the riding horse type from all over France, with horses of Anglo-Norman descent having a substantial proportion.

Exterior
Most of the Selle Français are foxes . The powerful hindquarters are more reminiscent of trotters than thoroughbreds and, like the strong hocks, are a good prerequisite for show jumping.

It is considered fast, powerful, and resilient. Despite its temperament, it has a calm and balanced character and is versatile.
Breeding history
Since the onset of engine after the Second World War led to a broad basis the decline of the riding horse breeding, the French Ministry of Agriculture tried 1,958 breeding by merging the farms of Normandy , the Brittany , the Vendée , the Charente , the arrondissement Charolles of and Berrichone back to a to provide a broader base. For this purpose, a joint stud book was created under the breed name Cheval de Selle-Français . The leading breeders of Normandy in France at the time had the greatest influence on the newly created breed. They had already tried beforehand to establish a show jumping breeding program by crossing thoroughbreds again , which should be internationally competitive. The breeders showed a very lucky hand by using such top-class horses as Furioso xx , who is counted among the most successful show jumping sires in the world today.
Known horses
- Cor de la Bryère : as a sire, one of the most influential sires of modern warmblood breeding, often referred to as the "stallion of the century".
- Quidam de Revel : Former world class jumping horse and stallion, recognized in all breeding areas of the world.
- Rochet M : The French Alexandra Ledermann won the bronze medal with the Cheval de Selle Français Rochet M at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta.
- Silbersee : stallion, was one of the most successful show jumpers in the world in the 1980s.
- Jappeloup de Luze : The rider Pierre Durand won the individual gold medal at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul with his horse.
