Marianna Longa (born April 26, 1979 in Tirano ) is a former Italian cross-country skier .

Career

Longa won the bronze medal over 7.5 km classic at the European Olympic Winter Youth Days 1995 in Andorra la Vella . In 1997 she took part in the Junior World Championships in Canmore . In the victory of Estonian Kristina Šmigun over 5 kilometers classic, she finished ninth. With the relay, she won the gold medal. Two years later in Saalfelden she won the bronze medal over 5 kilometers behind Lina Andersson and Pirjo Manninen . She finished seventh over 15 kilometers of freestyle . At the end of the 1999/2000 season, Longa was used for the first time in the cross-country world cup in Bormio . Over 5 kilometers she reached the 39th place and in the pursuit the 43rd place. In December 2001 Longa won her first World Cup points in the sprint in Asiago with 24th place. She also made it into the top 30 athletes over the classic 15-kilometer distance in Val di Fiemme . These results secured her a place in the Italian team at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City . There she was able to convince classically with 20th place over 10 kilometers, so that she was also nominated for the relay competition, in which the Italian team took sixth place. In the 2002/03 season Longa made it into the top ten for the first time in Oberhof with seventh place over 10 kilometers. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in 2003 in Val di Fiemme , she achieved eleventh place over 15 kilometers and class 20 over 10 kilometers. With the relay she finished seventh. In February 2005, Longa announced that she was expecting a child.

After the birth of their son Michele, Longa returned to the World Cup at the beginning of the 2006/07 season . After several strong performances, especially at the Tour de Ski , where she finished 15th overall, the classic specialist achieved her best career result to date at the World Cup in Otepää over the distance of 10 kilometers with fifth place. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Sapporo in 2007 , she also made it into the top ten with eighth place in the pursuit. At the end of the season she finished 19th in the overall World Cup and 13th in the Distance World Cup. After her most successful season to date, Longa announced in November 2007 that she would be retiring from active competitive sports for personal reasons. In March 2008, however, she returned to the Italian World Cup team. At the World Cup in Lahti , she celebrated a classic strong comeback with fifth place over 10 kilometers . At the World Cup final in Bormio , she managed fourth place over 10 kilometers in a classic way. She was able to repeat this result at the beginning of the 2008/09 season in Kuusamo , Finland . She finished the Tour de Ski 2008/09 in fifth place. In January 2009 she reached her first podium finish in Vancouver in the pursuit over 15 kilometers with second place. On January 30th, she celebrated her first victory in the mass start competition in Rybinsk . At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Liberec in 2009 she won the silver medal over the 15 kilometers classic behind Aino-Kaisa Saarinen and, together with Arianna Follis, the bronze medal in the team sprint. At the World Cup final in Falun , she came in 13th place and thus reached sixth place in the overall World Cup and third place in the Distance World Cup. In the following season she came in the points in all World Cup participations. In the Tour de Ski 2009/10 she finished eighth. Her best results at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver were seventh place in the 15 km skiathlon and fourth place in the relay. In March 2010 she took third place with the relay in Lahti. At the World Cup finals in Falun, she took 16th place and reached tenth place in the Distance World Cup and ninth place in the overall World Cup. At the start of her final 2010/11 season , she came in third place with the relay in Gällivare . At the subsequent Nordic Opening in Kuusamo, she took eighth place. In December 2010 she took second place with the relay at the World Cup in La Clusaz . The Tour de Ski 2010/11 she finished in third place. At the following World Cup in Liberec, she and Magda Genuin came second in the team sprint. In Rybinsk, she won the relay and took second place in the skiathlon . At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Oslo in 2011 , she came fourth in team sprint and relay. In the individual, the fifth place in the skiathlon was her best result. She finished the season in seventh place in the overall World Cup and fourth in the Distance World Cup.
