Gebregziabher Gebremariam ( Amharic ገብረ እግዚአብሄር ገብረ ማርያም; born September 10, 1984 in the Tigray region ) is a former Ethiopian long-distance runner .
Career
In 2002 he first attracted international attention when he won the junior race at the World Cross Country Championships in Dublin . In the same year he started at the Junior World Championships in Kingston . There he won the 10,000 meter run with a time of 29: 02.71 minutes and finished third in the 5000 meter run in 13: 29.13 minutes.
From 2003 he started in the adult sector. At the World Cross Country Championships in Lausanne , he won the bronze medal in the endurance race. He won another medal in second over 10,000 meters at the Pan-African Games in Abuja behind his compatriot Sileshi Sihine . At the 2003 World Championships in Paris / Saint-Denis , he finished sixth over 5,000 meters in a time of 12: 58.08 min.
In 2004 he was initially successful again at the World Cross Country Championships. In Brussels he won the silver medal on both the short and the long haul, only beaten by his compatriot Kenenisa Bekele . At the Olympic Games in Athens he narrowly missed a medal in the 5,000-meter run in 13: 15.35 minutes.
In 2005 he finished ninth on the short distance at the World Cross Country Championships in Saint-Galmier , while he gave up the race on the long distance prematurely. At the 2005 World Championships in Helsinki he finished 15th in the 10,000 meter run in 27: 53.19 minutes. It was a rather disappointing result after becoming the Ethiopian national champion in the 5,000 and 10,000 meters that year. In the 10,000 meter run at the 2007 World Championships in Osaka he was sixth in 27: 44.58 minutes and won the bronze medal at the Africa Games in Algiers . He was also the 2008 African champion over this distance.
In 2009 he celebrated the greatest success of his career so far by winning the Cross Country World Championships in Amman . This victory came as a surprise after Gebremariam could not achieve a placement in the top ten in his last two appearances in 2006 in Fukuoka and 2008 in Edinburgh . At the 2009 World Championships in Berlin , he finished tenth in the 10,000 meter run.
Gebremariam also took tenth place at the 2010 World Cross Country Championships in Bydgoszcz. As the season progressed, he then focused on running on the road . He celebrated several victories in high-profile races in the United States, including the Healthy Kidney 10K , Beach to Beacon 10K and Falmouth Road Race , and finished second in the Philadelphia Half Marathon . In November he made his debut in the 42.195 km distance and won the New York City Marathon straight away . At the New York City Half Marathon in March 2011, he finished second.
