Selçuk Çebi (born June 3, 1982 in Arakli, Trabzon Province ) is a Turkish wrestler . In 2009, 2010 and 2015 he became world champion in the Greco-Roman style in the weight classes up to 74 kg and 80 kg body weight

Career

Life

From 1994 Selçuk Çebi attended Imam Hatip High School in Trabzon and only began wrestling there at the age of 12 at the suggestion of his father. He concentrated on the Greco-Roman style. In the course of his career he was a member of Trabzon Belediyespor, Çaykur Rizespor and Istanbul Büyüksehir Belediyesi SK. He was trained in these clubs by Mustapha Sahin, Aydin Özkan, Rustem Kuyuncu and in the national team mainly by Hakki Basar. In addition to his sporting career, he also devoted himself to a scientific education and studied at Ondokuz Mayis University and obtained a master's degree in management from Science Avrasya University. From 2005 he was sports coordinator in the Ministry of Youth and Sports. Since 2015 he has been the head of the sports department in this ministry. In 2018 he stepped down and ran for a seat in parliament for the AKP in Trabzon. He is married and has one daughter.

Athletic career

Selçuk Çebi was already in 1998 in Pretoria and in 1999 in Nyköbing Junior World Champion of the Cadets in the weight class up to 69 kg. In 2001 he won a bronze medal at the Junior World Championships in Tashkent in the weight class up to 69 kg. In the same year he was used in the same weight class at the European Senior Championship in Istanbul. He came in 5th place. Alexander Doktorishvili from Georgia became European champion.

In 2002 he became Junior European Champion in the age group "Juniors" in Subotica.

During his military service he won a bronze medal at the 2001 World Military Championships in Split in the weight class up to 69 kg and a silver medal at the 2003 World Military Championships in Istanbul in the weight class up to 66 kg.

As a student he became student world champion in Izmir in 2005 and in Ulaan-Baatar in 2006, each in the weight class up to 66 kg. In 2005 he also won the Mediterranean Games in Almería in front of the Spaniard Moises Sanchez Parra. In 2007 he was also at the start of the German Grand Prix in Dortmund and came third in the weight class up to 66 kg behind Ionel Puscasu , Romania and Jimmy Samuelsson from Sweden.

It was only in 2009 that Selçuk Çebi returned to an international championship (Olympic Games, World or European Championship). The reason for this was his studies and the tough competition in his own country. Above all, Şeref Eroğlu took him away from starting these championships in his weight class during these years. In 2009 he finally made his breakthrough in the Turkish team. Now starting in the weight class up to 74 kg, he first became third European champion in Vilnius in April . Çebi only lost to former world champion Volodymyr Schazkych from Ukraine. In September 2009 he finally became world champion. In the final he defeated the Danish Mark Overgaard Madsen .

In 2010 he successfully defended his title in Moscow. On the way to this success he defeated in the weight class up to 74 kg u. a. Neven Zugaj from Croatia, Imil Scharafedinow from Russia and in the final Arsen Julfalakjan from Armenia. At the 2011 European Championships in Dortmund he lost in the semifinals against Rafik Huseinow from Azerbaijan and in the battle for a bronze medal against Christophe Guénot from France. He came in 5th place. At the 2011 World Cup in Istanbul, Selcuk Cebi first had five wins and also defeated Arsen Dschulfalakjan, but was defeated by Russian superstar Roman Vlasov in the final and came in second.

2012 was disappointing for him. He didn't start at the European Championships because he was fully focused on the Olympic Games in London. In London he surprisingly lost in the first round against Robert Patrik Rosengren from Sweden. Since this did not reach the final, he was eliminated and only came in 13th place. A big disappointment for him.

In 2013 Selçuk Çebi started in the weight class up to 84 kg. But he could not achieve any success in this class, the weight disadvantages were too great. At the 2013 European Championships in Tbilisi, he only got one victory over Jawid Hamsatow from Belarus and was eliminated from Croatia after a defeat against Nenad Zugaj. he only reached 13th place. Things went even worse at the 2013 World Cup when he lost to Chinese Peng Fei in the first round and ended up in 21st place.

In 2014 the international wrestling federation FILA (today UWW) carried out a weight class reform. It was u. a. introduced a new weight class up to 80 kg body weight. This weight class was perfect for Selçuk Çebi. In April 2014 he won the silver medal in this weight class at the European Championships in Vantaa. In the final he lost there against Peter Bacsi from Hungary. In September 2014 he also won a medal at the World Championships in Tashkent. He defeated there u. a. the very strong wrestlers Daniel Alexandrow Tihomirow from Bulgaria and Habibollah Jomeh Akhlagi from Iran, but failed in the quarter-finals against Evgeni Salejew from Russia. In the consolation round he secured a bronze medal with a victory over Bozo Starcevic from Croatia.

Selçuk Çebi narrowly missed the medals with a 5th place at the European Championship, which was held in Baku in 2015, because he lost in the semifinals against Rafik Huseinow from Azerbaijan and in the battle for a bronze medal against Daniel Alexandrow Tihomirow. At the 2015 World Championships in Las Vegas, he won the third title in the weight class up to 80 kg. On the way to this great success he defeated Lascha Gobadze from Georgia in the semifinals and Viktor Sasunowski from Belarus in the final.

Since the weight class up to 80 kg is not Olympic, Selçuk Çebi had to train in the weight class up to 75 kg and he also had to qualify in this weight class for participation in the Olympic wrestling tournament. He succeeded in this at the second attempt at the qualification tournament in Istanbul, where he won ahead of Daniel Alexandrow Tihomirow, Robert Rosengren and Bozo Starcevic. At the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, however, he was again granted no success. Selçuk Çebi lost to Bozo Starcevic in the last sixteen, was eliminated and only came in 15th.

Then he ended his active wrestling career.
