FSV Steinsberg, 1953 to 1963

In today's (2007) Regenstauf market in the Upper Palatinate district of Regensburg, district of Steinsberg, the student Gerhard Faltermeier went through the various youth classes in the youth department of the local FSV Steinsberg. Already at the age of 17 the offensive talent stormed in the first team of the home club in the district league Regensburg. Due to his outstanding hit rate, he was noticed by the SSV Jahn Regensburg scouts . Jahn had been downgraded to 13th place in the 1962/63 season in the 2nd League South due to the introduction of the Bundesliga from 1963/64 to the 1st Amateur League Bavaria. The club of the ex-national goalkeeper Hans Jakob , wanted to achieve promotion to the second-rate Regionalliga Süd in the 1963/64 round and was therefore interested in a talented goal scorer. At the age of 19, “Benno” Faltermeier moved to Regensburg in 1963.

SSV Jahn Regensburg, 1963 to 1972

The young attacker from FSV Steinsberg immediately put himself in the limelight in the Bayern League in 1963/64 and was part of the Jahn team, with whom he won the runner-up. In the second year in Regensburg he experienced the surprising relegation to the Bavarian State League with the Red-Whites in the Jahn Stadium. Faltermeier immediately celebrated the championship with Jahn Regensburg and promotion to the 1st amateur league in Bavaria in the 1965/66 season. During this phase, 1. FC Nürnberg campaigned intensively for the Jahn-Elf scorer. It was only thanks to the great commitment on the part of the Jahn management that Faltermeier's preliminary contract, which he had signed with the “Club”, could be reversed and the best attacker for the 1st amateur league in Regensburg could be kept. Jahn started in the Regionalliga Süd. The climber reached in the 1966/67 round with Gerhard Faltermeier the move into the Regionalliga Süd. In the Regionalliga he fought with Regensburg 1967/68 continuously to stay in the league. On the penultimate game day, Jahn only scored 1-1 in his home game and thus almost lost the last chance to stay in the league. Frankfurt and Regensburg started the last matchday, which was played on May 12, 1968, tied with 20:46 points. The Faltermeier-Elf competed in Rüsselsheim, the FSV in the home stadium on Bornheimer Hang against Waldhof Mannheim. “Benno” Faltermeier scored the 2-0 final score for his Jahn team in the 52nd minute, Frankfurt lost their home game 0-1 and Jahn Regensburg managed to stay in the league at the last minute.

After two rounds with coach Aki Schmidt in the Upper Palatinate, Faltermeier experienced Heinz Elzner, his third coach with Jahn in the 1970/71 season. In the South German Cup of 1970, the SSV moved into the first main round of the DFB Cup after successes over SpVgg Weiden (2: 1), SpVgg Bayreuth (3: 1) and FC Bayern Hof (4: 2) . In front of 15,000 spectators on January 3, 1970 in the domestic Jahn Stadium, a 1-0 win against Bundesliga club Eintracht Braunschweig was achieved . Together with Manfred Ritschel , Gerhard Faltermeier formed a dangerous right wing. The round of 16 took place on July 29, 1970 at Bayern Munich . Munich won 4-0 goals in front of 20,000 spectators. After nine rounds in Regensburg, the 28-year-old Faltermeier accepted the offer from Karlsruher SC and moved to Baden in the summer of 1972.

Goal of the month

The then midfielder of SSV Jahn Regensburg chased a 20-meter free kick into the corner in the regional league game (at that time second class) against VfR Mannheim on March 28, 1971, so that the ball got stuck in the net. 71,000 out of 250,000 entries voted this hit the first “goal of the month”. Sportschau host Oskar Klose presented the first award to Faltermeier.

With 31 games and six goals, Faltermeier had a share in the runner-up of the eleven from the wildlife park in the 1972/73 regional league and the associated move into the promotion round to the Bundesliga. But there sat Fortuna Köln through and the team at KSC coach Heinz Baas had no chance. In his second season in Karlsruhe, the midfielder experienced the newcomer Carl-Heinz Rühl . Faltermeier was very impressed by the dynamic and positive nature of the Cologne man, this was true despite the only midfield position achieved in this round. In 29 games, "Benno" contributed five hits for the Baden team. Since the era of the 2nd Bundesliga was announced at the beginning of the 1974/75 round , he was 31 years old and his comfortable employee position at the federal and state pension fund in Karlsruhe's Hans-Thoma-Strasse as a professional in the 2nd Bundesliga had been at stake, Gerhard Faltermeier ended his career in contract league football after the 1973/74 round.

Selection gauges

Bavaria selection

Gerhard Faltermeier in the dress of the Bavarian association selection

Already in the course of the first association round with Jahn Regensburg in 1963/64, Faltermeier was appointed to the association selection by association trainer Horst Sturz and also took part in a trip to Africa in 1964 with the Bavarian team. With the BFV selection, he won the DFB country cup twice in 1965 and 1968 with teammates such as Heinz Wittmann , Rudolf Netzel , Josef Parzl , Manfred Ritschel , Horst Pohl , Manfred Großesler and Dieter Nüssing .

In 1967 he took part in a trip to North America with the Bavarian Football Association , which gave the 24-year-old from the Upper Palatinate region completely new insights into the way of life. In total, Faltermeier made 28 appointments in the Bavarian amateur team from 1965 to 1968.

German national football team of amateurs, 1965 to 1968

DFB coach Dettmar Cramer called the 21-year-old Faltermeier to his first international match in the German amateur national team for the game on June 2, 1965 in Wiesbaden against Holland. In the 4: 2 success he formed the internal trio with Heinz-Herbert Kreh and Gerhard Neuser . In 1966 the two appearances in the UEFA Amateur Cup against Turkey in Bamberg and against Yugoslavia in Sisak stood out.

In the debut of the later record national player Egon Schmitt on May 25, 1967 in Konstanz against Italy, Faltermeier stormed in the attack of the DFB-Elf. The 0-0 draw against Austria on September 20, 1967, had a high emotional value, as it was played in front of a home crowd at the Jahn Stadium in Regensburg. Dettmar Cramer's successor, Udo Lattek , also placed his trust in the Regensburg man for the two Olympic qualifying games against Great Britain in 1967. The home game on October 25th was lost in Augsburg with 2-0 goals, so that the 1-0 win on November 8th in Hendon was not enough for qualification. "Benno" Faltermeier remembered the London derby Arsenal against West Ham United in the run-up to the second leg for a long time. The atmosphere in the stadium, the mood of the fans in the packed stands and their incessant support for the teams left a lasting impression on the then 24-year-old. For Faltermeier and his colleagues from the amateur national team, the trip to Asia in December 1967 / January 1968 brought with it not to be missed experiences. From December 30, 1967 to January 17, 1968, the DFB-Elf played six international matches against Burma, Thailand, Malaysia, Hong Kong, the Philippines and Japan. The impressions of the cities, the people on the street and in the stadium, these were moments for which it was worth being an amateur national player, Faltermeier remarked in a conversation about this trip. Since Jahn Regensburg did not want to give the player any time off for the amateur national team after his trip to Asia, the 13th international game on January 3, 1968 in Bangkok against Thailand was Faltermeier's last game for the DFB amateurs.

Trainer in the amateur camp, 1975-1998

After a stopover as a player at SC Baden-Baden in the 1st Amateur League South Baden in the 1974/75 round, "Benno" Faltermeier began his career as an amateur coach at ASV Durlach in the summer of 1975 . Up to the age of 40 he exercised this task as a player-coach. His work in Durlach was followed by the stations KSC-A-Jugend, SG Siemens Karlsruhe, FV Hochstetten, FC Eggenstein, Fortuna Kirchfeld, FC Busenbach, FV Berghausen and FG Rüppurr. In addition to his coaching engagements, the "running miracle" Faltermeier strengthened the traditional KSC team for many years. At the end of 1998, various operations forced him to quit his coaching activity.

After football

Gerhard Faltermeier had been retired since 2006 and was recovering from cancer surgery. He lived with his wife in Karlsruhe and had two grandchildren. He was also still interested in the performance of Jahn and Karlsruher SC. On March 9, 2009, Gerd Faltermeier died of cancer at the age of 65.
