Kaarle Ojanen

Kaarle Sakari Ojanen (born December 4, 1918 in Helsinki , † January 9, 2009 there ) was a Finnish chess player . He was considered the leading Finnish player in the period after Eero Böök and before Heikki Westerinen . One of his most famous games is a victory over the Russian grandmaster Paul Keres , in which he prevailed against the modern Benoni defense of his opponent in an exemplary manner (center breakthrough).

In 1952, FIDE awarded Ojanen the title of International Master (IM); In 1981 he won the title of International Correspondence Chess Master.

Between 1950 and 1983 he took part in the Finnish chess championships a total of 18 times , which he won 13 times (1950, 1951, 1952, 1953, 1957, 1958, 1959, 1960, 1961, 1962, 1967, 1972 and 1983). Ojanen represented Finland at eleven Chess Olympiads : 1937 , 1950 , 1952 , 1956 , 1958 , 1960 , 1962 , 1966 , 1968 , 1970 and 1972 , including on the first board from 1956 to 1966 and on the second board in 1968, 1970 and 1972 ( first board back then: Heikki Westerinen); he achieved a total of 94 out of 162 points. At the 1966 Chess Olympiad in Havana , Ojanen received an individual bronze medal for his result on the first board. He also took part in the unofficial Chess Olympiad in Munich in 1936 . With Gambiiti Helsinki , playing on the top board, he was Finnish team champion in the 1975/76 and 1980/81 seasons and took part in the European Club Cup in 1979.

At the international level, he achieved his greatest successes with a fourth place at the tournament in Oslo in 1939, a third place (under ten players) in Helsinki in 1946 and a 17th place at the tournament in Trenčianske Teplice in 1949. He was also successful in correspondence chess at international tournaments . At the Eino Heilimo Memorial Tournament II (1978-1982), which Duncan Suttles won, he was tied for third. Among the 17 participants were Juliane Hund (8 points) and the former correspondence chess world champion Lūcijs Endzelīns (6 points).
