Bert Schneider (racing driver)

Bert "Bertl" Schneider (born August 28, 1936 ; † July 2, 2009 in Vienna , Austria ) was an Austrian motorcycle racer . In the 1950s and 1960s, he was considered one of the best pilots in Austria.

Career

Schneider made his debut at the Grand Prix of the GDR at the Sachsenring in 1961 in the motorcycle world championship . He competed as a private driver on Norton in the classes up to 350 and 500  cc . The Austrian finished sixth in the 350 cc, and third in the half-liter class, behind Gary Hocking and Mike Hailwood . In the same year Schneider also became Austrian national champion in the 500 cm³ class.

In 1962 Bert Schneider was fourth overall in the 500 cm³ class on his Norton. These good results earned him a place in the factory team of the Japanese manufacturer Suzuki for the 1963 season , for whom he competed in the 125 cc class alongside Hugh Anderson , Ernst Degner and Frank Perris . At the Belgian Grand Prix in Spa-Francorchamps in 1963 Schneider won the only Grand Prix victory of his career. In the overall standings, the Austrian took fifth place.

After finishing fourth in the eighth-liter class in 1964 , again in the Suzuki team, Bert Schneider ended his career. He completed a total of 22 World Championship races, in which he achieved one victory and a total of eight podium places. In 1963 he was the 83rd and last racing driver to receive the celebrity badge of the Austrian Motor Racing Driver Association (Ö.MRV). The first badge holder was Leopold Dirtl , Fritz Dirtl's father in 1928 (badge no. 53 1950).
