Bernard Dunne (* 6. February 1980 in Clondalkin , Ireland ) is a former Irish boxer in the super bantamweight . From March to September 2009 he was world champion of the WBA .

His father Brendan Dunne was also a boxer and participant in the 1976 Olympic Games .

Amateur career

Bernard Dunne won a bronze medal at the 1995 European Cadet Championship, and was quarter-finalist at the 1997 European Junior Championship and the 1998 Junior World Championship .

In the adult he was Irish bantamweight champion in 1998 and Irish featherweight champion in 1999 and 2000. At the European Championships in 1998 and the World Championships in 1999 , he was eliminated in the first sixteen.

Professional career

On December 19, 2001, he successfully made his professional debut. In November 2006 he was European Champion of the EBU and defended the title twice before suffering his first defeat against Kiko Martinez .

On March 21, 2009 he became regular world champion of the WBA when he defeated Ricardo Córdoba by technical knockout in round 11. He lost this title in his first title defense in September of the same year to Poonsawat Kratingdaenggym by knockout. After this defeat he ended his career.
