Alpine Indoor Ski European Championship 2009
The European Indoor Ski Championships 2009 took place on November 7th in the ski hall in Amnéville in north-eastern France . It was the first event of the European Ski Federation (ESF) founded in May 2009 . It was organized as a K.-o. - Slalom competition organized by the French Ski Federation. The slope was 482 meters long with a difference in altitude of 88 meters and an average gradient of 18 percent. The European champions were the French Jean-Baptiste Grange and the Slovak Veronika Zuzulová . There have been no other events of this kind since then.
Regulations
Only athletes from Europe were eligible to participate. The competition was held in the form of a knockout slalom. Of the participating runners, the eight best placed in the second slalom FIS points list 2009/10 were set for the round of 16. The other eight places in the final were determined in two qualification runs. The three best of each run and the two runners with the best overall time qualified for the round of 16. From the round of 16 onwards, two runners competed against each other, the winner progressed one lap. The medal winners were determined in the final and in the small final from the winners and losers of the semifinals. Places 5 to 8 were assigned according to the running times of those who were eliminated in the quarter-finals and places 9 to 16 according to the running times of those who failed in the second round. The other runners were ranked according to their total time from the two qualification runs. If two runners had achieved the same time to the hundredth of a second in a direct duel, the time measured to the thousandth of a second would have been used to determine the winner. If there was another tie, or if none of the runners reached the finish line in accordance with the rules, the runner with the better FIS points won. This regulation came into play in the quarter-finals between Thomas Fanara and Manfred Mölgg.
Controversies with the International Ski Federation
The implementation of the European Indoor Ski Championships by the ESF caused disagreements with the International Ski Federation (FIS). Gian-Franco Kasper , President of the FIS, did not rule out sanctions against participating athletes or associations in the run-up to the European Championship. According to the FIS statutes, sanctions would have been possible since the competition did not appear in the FIS calendar. After a conversation between the athlete's representative Kilian Albrecht and FIS President Kasper, at least the athletes did not have to fear any sanctions. The lack of clarity about possible consequences prevented some nations from participating in the European Championship. Not least because of the dispute with the FIS, the European Indoor Ski Championships received a lot of media attention. At its autumn meeting on November 14th, 2009 the FIS Board reserved sanctions against the four ESF member federations. A meeting between members of the FIS board and the presidents of the ESF member associations should take place. On November 17, 2009, the ESF announced that the International Ski Federation would not impose any sanctions.
Attendees
A total of 74 athletes (35 men and 39 women) from 10 nations took part. In addition to the ESF members France, Italy, Austria and Switzerland, these were Andorra, Belgium, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Russia and Slovakia. Some countries with strong athletes, such as Germany, Croatia, the Czech Republic or the Scandinavian countries did not take part. The women therefore lacked the three strongest slalom runners according to the FIS ranking, Maria Riesch , Šárka Záhrobská and Tanja Poutiainen .
