The National Stadium Kaohsiung ( Chinese  國家 體育場  /  国家 体育场 , Pinyin Guójiā Tǐyùchǎng ), formerly World Games Stadium , is a multifunctional stadium in the port city of Kaohsiung on the island of Taiwan . It was built for the 2009 World Games and the Games' opening and closing ceremonies were held there. The architect and designer of the stadium is the Japanese Toyo Ito .

The stadium was opened on May 20, 2009 with the so-called World Games concert and a final fireworks display . The concert was given by the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and the Vienna State Opera Choir .

The stadium's capacity during the World Games was 55,000. Seats were later removed and the standard capacity of 40,000 seats restored.

The roof of the stadium consists of 8,844 solar modules and provides 1.14 million kilowatt hours of electricity per year . It extends over 14,155 m 2 . The stadium and the outdoor facilities extend over a total of 19 hectares . All raw materials used in the construction are recyclable and made exclusively in Taiwan. The energy obtained from the solar modules is sold on to the state electricity company. The World Games stadium is the first stadium in the world that can only be operated with energy generated by the sun.

After the end of the games, the stadium was the venue for some home games of the Taiwanese national football team and the Taiwan Power Company FC club also plays its home games there.
