Lis Hartel (born March 14, 1921 in Copenhagen ; † February 12, 2009 there ) was a Danish dressage rider.

Life

She fell ill with polio in 1943 and after surviving the disease was no longer able to move the muscles in her lower legs. Nevertheless, she became a successful dressage rider. She needed outside help before and after every ride because she could not mount the horse on her own. Her great successes in dressage are all the more astonishing.

She won the silver medal in dressage at the Olympic Games in Helsinki in 1952 and in Stockholm in 1956 on Jubilee , both times behind the Swede Henri Saint Cyr . It was also the Swedish officer who raised her to the podium at the awards ceremony at the 1952 Olympic Games. In 1954 she became world champion in dressage in Aachen .

In 1992 Lis Hartel was inducted into the Hall of Fame of Danish Sports .

Lis Hartel died in 2009 at the age of 87. She was buried at Grønholt Kirkegård, Fredensborg Kommune , next to her husband Poul Finn Hartel, who died in 1997.
