David Murdoch (born April 17, 1978 in Dumfries ) is a former Scottish curler .

Murdoch from Lockerbie is a two-time junior world champion, in 1995 in Perth as a substitute for Tom Brewster Jr. and in 1996 in Red Deer as the lead in James Dryburgh's team . In 1998 he won the silver medal at the Junior World Championships in Thunder Bay , as third in Garry MacKay's team . In 1999 Murdoch rose to the position of skip , team captain, and reached 5th place at the Junior World Championships in Östersund .

In 2003 he led Scotland to the European Championship in Courmayeur , beating Skip Peter Lindholm's Swedish team in the final . 2005 Murdoch took part in a world championship for the first time; in Victoria (British Columbia) he lost in the final of the Canadian team of Skip Randy Ferbey. These good performances entitle him to participate in the 2006 Winter Olympics , where he started for Great Britain and reached fourth place. Almost two months later, Murdoch became world champion with the Scottish team in Lowell (Massachusetts) .

In December 2006, his team won the silver medal at the European Curling Championships in Basel, and the European championship title a year later in Füssen . He was able to successfully defend this title in 2008 in Örnsköldsvik, Sweden .

In 2009 he and his team won the World Curling Championship in Moncton, Canada. In the final they defeated the Canadian team around Skip Kevin Martin .

At the European Championships in 2009 in Aberdeen, Scotland, he and his team lost to Ralph Stöckli's Swiss team in the play-offs and finished in fourth place.

As Skip , Murdoch played at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver on Team Great Britain with Third Ewan MacDonald , Second Peter Smith , Lead Euan Byers and Alternate Graeme Connal . In the tie-break game his team lost to the Swedish team led by Skip Niklas Edin and finished in fifth place.

For the 2010 World Cup, Murdoch and his team lost in the Scottish qualification against the team from Warwick Smith . However, he was able to attend the World Cup as an alternate in Smith's team, but only had one assignment there. In the end, the Scottish team won the bronze medal, in the game for third place they defeated the USA with Skip Pete Fenson 6: 4.

At the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi , he and his team won the silver medal and only had to admit defeat to the Canadians.

In 2017 Murdoch announced that he would end his curling career and work as a trainer in the future. Shortly before, the British federation had decided that Kyle Smith and his team would represent Great Britain at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang , although Murdoch made it possible for Great Britain to take part in the Winter Games with his sixth place at the 2017 World Cup .
