Motorcycle world championship
The season is overshadowed by the death of the Japanese Daijirō Katō , who died on April 6 at the MotoGP race for the Japanese Grand Prix and died of his injuries on April 20.
MotoGP class (990 cm³)
- In the MotoGP class, the 24-year-old Italian Valentino Rossi won the fifth world title of his career on a Honda and the second in a row in this category. He prevails against the Spaniard Sete Gibernau and his compatriot Max Biaggi (both also Honda). In the constructors' championship, Honda wins ahead of Ducati and Yamaha .
250 cc class
- In the 250 cc class, the 20-year-old San Marinese Manuel Poggiali won the second world championship title of his career on Aprilia, ahead of Italian Roberto Rolfo ( Honda ) and Spaniard Toni Elías (Aprilia). In the constructors' championship Aprilia prevailed against Honda and Yamaha .
125 cc class
- The 18-year-old Spaniard Dani Pedrosa won the world title in the eight-liter class on a Honda . San-Marinese Alex De Angelis came in second, while Spaniard Héctor Barberá came third , both on Aprilia . In the constructors' championship, Aprilia wins ahead of Honda and Derbi .
Superbike World Championship
- The 29-year-old Briton Neil Hodgson wins the drivers' championship on Ducati ahead of the Spaniard Rubén Xaus and the Briton James Toseland (both also Ducati). In the constructors' championship Ducati prevailed ahead of Suzuki and Kawasaki .

World Supersport Championship
- 21-year-old Australian Chris Vermeulen wins the drivers' championship on a Honda ahead of Frenchman Stéphane Chambon ( Suzuki ) and Dutchman Jürgen van den Goorbergh ( Yamaha ). In the constructors' championship, Honda beats Suzuki and Yamaha.
