- In the 250 cm³ class, the 25-year-old Japanese Daijirō Katō won the world title on a Honda ahead of his compatriot Tetsuya Harada ( Aprilia ) and the Italian Marco Melandri (Honda). In the constructors' championship, Honda prevailed against Aprilia and Yamaha .
125 cc class
- The 18-year-old San-Mrinese Manuel Poggiali wins the world title in the eight-liter class on Gilera . Second is the Japanese Yōichi Ui ( Derbi ), third is the Spaniard Toni Elías on a Honda . In the constructors' championship, Honda wins ahead of Aprilia and Gilera.

- The 32-year-old Australian Troy Bayliss won the drivers' championship on a Ducati ahead of the American Colin Edwards ( Honda ) and his compatriot Ben Bostrom (Ducati). In the constructors' championship, Ducati prevailed ahead of Honda and Aprilia .

- The 25-year-old Australian Andrew Pitt wins the drivers' championship on a Kawasaki ahead of the Italian Paolo Casoli and the German Jörg Teuchert (both Yamaha ). In the constructors' championship, Yamaha prevailed against Honda and Kawasaki.
