Yōichi Ui ( Japanese 宇井 陽 一 , Ui Yōichi ; born November 27, 1972 in Tako , Chiba Prefecture ) is a Japanese motorcycle racer .

In his career he was twice vice world champion in the 125 cm³ class of the motorcycle world championship .

Career

Yōichi Ui won the Japanese 125cc Championship on Yamaha in 1995 , in the same year he made his debut at the Japanese Grand Prix in Suzuka in the 125cc World Championship . From the following season he started permanently in the Yamaha Kurz team in the 125 cm³ World Championship and reached 18th place with 36 points. In 1997 the Japanese climbed to twelfth place overall, in 1998 he reached eleventh place in the world championship.

For the 1999 season, Yōichi Ui moved to the Italian manufacturer Derbi , where he was a works driver at the side of Pablo Nieto and in the first year was again eleventh in the World Cup. In the 2000 season , Ui achieved his first Grand Prix victory at his home Grand Prix, which was followed by four more over the course of the season. In the overall standings, he only had to admit defeat to Italian Aprilia driver Roberto Locatelli , 13 points behind . In the following year Ui even achieved six wins. After an exciting spurt at the end of the season, in which the Japanese almost caught up with the World Cup leader Manuel Poggiali from San Marino , he only came second in the overall standings. Ui presented the Kenny Roberts sr. 1983 set a record for the most victories of the season without a world title win. In 2002 , Yōichi Ui was unable to match the results of the previous two years. With second place at the Italian Grand Prix in Mugello , he only achieved a podium finish and finished the season in thirteenth.

2003 Yōichi Ui went to Sterilgarda Racing and the Freesoul Racing Team on Gilera and Aprilia and again reached the 13th World Championship rank. In 2004 he only contested the first half of the season in the 125 cc class and was 22nd overall. In the second half of the season he started four times for Harris-WCM in the MotoGP class and scored his only point for the English team at the Japanese Grand Prix . From 2005 Ui focused again on the Japanese championship. In 2006 and 2007 the Japanese competed in his home race on a Yamaha in the 250 cc class, but could not achieve any results worth mentioning. In 2007 he won his second Japanese championship title with Yamaha in the 250cc class, followed by his third title in the same class in 2009.

In the 133 motorcycle grands prix that Yōichi Ui contested in his career, he achieved eleven wins, 22 podiums, 17 pole positions and nine fastest laps .
