Daniel (Waldeck)

Daniel von Waldeck (born August 1, 1530 , † June 7, 1577 in Waldeck ) was Count von Waldeck - Wildungen . He was the third, but oldest surviving son of Count Philip IV (1493–1574) and his first wife Margarethe von Ostfriesland (1500–1537). He came from the Waldeck family .

Although his parents were reformed, he became canon of Strasbourg in 1550 . However, he soon gave up this post and joined the French army. After the death of his father, he inherited the Waldeck Castle and half of the Waldeck office as well as the town and office of Naumburg .

On April 4, 1567 he was one of the pallbearers at the funeral of Landgrave Philip I of Hesse . There he probably met his daughter Barbara (1536–1597), the widow of Georg von Württemberg-Mömpelgard (1498–1558). The two married on November 11, 1568. Their coats of arms can still be found today in the stair tower of Waldeck Castle. The marriage remained childless.

Daniel died in 1577 and was buried in the grave chapel of St. Nicholas in the Marienthal monastery in Netze . He was succeeded by his brother Heinrich IX. who died on October 3rd of the same year.
