Teaching
In biology studies, emphasis is placed on problematizing the theory of evolution and presenting the view of the young earth creationist as a better explanation. The university works with the group " Answers in Genesis ". Liberty University introduced compulsory intelligent design classes so that all students, regardless of their field of study, are required to study one semester of creationist biology. In October 2006, a job advertisement was posted looking for academic staff who shared the views of the Young Earth creationists.
Principle and Code of Conduct
The code of conduct provides for reprimands and, in the case of repeated offenses, fines for certain behavior by students. Prohibited behavior includes: Attending dance events , not complying with the nighttime curfew , viewing film material that is only rated for ages 17 and over, drinking alcohol , smoking , watching pornography , entering the bedroom Member of the opposite sex, abortion , and the signing of unauthorized petitions . In the summer of 2005, dress codes were relaxed to allow flip-flops , capris , jeans and other informal clothing styles (but not shorts or clothing with holes). Further rules, such as B. that male students are only allowed to wear collared shirts continue to apply. The contract with the members of the faculty provides for similar restrictions. When the University Chancellor, Jerry Falwell, Jr., recommended the presidential candidate Mike Huckabee on paper with the university's letterhead, the university was reported to the US tax authorities for violating political neutrality.
Sports
The sports teams are Liberty Flames . The university is a member of the Atlantic Sun Conference . The football team is an independent team within the FBS (English: FBS independent ) and therefore not a member of a conference.
criticism
Creationism
Evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins said of Liberty University:
“If it's really true that the museum at Liberty University has dinosaur fossils which are labeled as being 3,000 years old, then that is an educational disgrace. It is debauching the whole idea of a university, and I would strongly encourage any members of Liberty University who may be here, to leave and go to a proper university. "
“If it's really true that the LU Museum has dinosaur fossils believed to be 3,000 years old, that's an educational shame. The whole idea of a university is being dragged into the mud and I can only strongly advise everyone to leave this university and go to a decent university. "
Handguns
In a speech on December 5, 2015 in connection with the terrorist attack in San Bernardino , President Jerry Falwell Jr. encouraged the student body to obtain gun licenses for handguns. He said: "If more good people had gun licenses, we could have killed the Muslims before they could enter." After criticism, Fallwell rowed back, saying he only wanted to talk about violent Muslims.
Donald Trump
University President Jerry Falwell Jr. has been a supporter of Donald Trump since 2012. In the run-up to the Republican presidential primaries, Falwell Jr. began campaigning for Trump. At the 2016 Republican National Convention , where Trump was named candidate, he gave a speech on graduation day. At the end of January 2017 it was announced that he would be appointed by US President Trump to chair a commission for the “reform” of the United States Department of Education . Falwell explicitly praised Trump's statements on the right-wing extremist demonstrations in Charlottesville in August 2017 . As a reaction, there were protests by former students who asked for their university certificates to be returned to the university.
