history
One kilometer south of the village, seven parallel bronze swords and a lance tip from the younger Bronze Age were found during road construction in 1906 . The find is assigned to a cultic laying down.
The first written mention of the place was in 1093. The historian Johann Georg Leuckfeld (1668–1726) wrote that the Counts of Northeim had ceded part of the place to the Bursfelde Monastery in the 11th century and that a Count Heinrich von Kercberch in 1295 ceded three hooves in Kemstede to the Walkenried monastery . Interest from Kehmstedt received the Kreuzstift and the nunnery on the Frauenberg in Nordhausen as well as the Ilfeld monastery . In 1334 the Crucis monastery , one of the former Nordhausen monasteries, owned in deserta Bulingen , the aforementioned desert.

St. Martin Church
A striking sight of the place is the St. Martin's Church, built in the 17th century. The entrance to the nave was once on its south side, near the tower, it is now walled up. The tower, which is mighty in relation to the nave, is the oldest part of the building. It has a tapering, slate roof, in which small dormer windows are embedded in all four directions . The top is crowned by a golden tower ball with an attached golden weather vane . The sound of the bell leaves the bell cage through sound arcades , which are located directly under the eaves on the north and west sides of the tower. A tower clock with a white dial can be found on the south side. There are several large wall anchors in the upper part of the tower that were later attached to secure the building. In the south side of the tower three loops-like narrow windows lying one above the other can be seen.
On the east side of the tower is the slightly wider nave, which is covered with red tiles. The eastern end of the nave is formed by a choir, the two side walls of which are somewhat retracted in relation to the width of the nave. The interior of the church is illuminated by three high arched windows on the two long sides of the nave and two somewhat smaller arched windows in the choir.
The south wall of the nave and the choir received a new white plaster made of Hundisburg high- fire plaster under the direction of the Halberstadt architect Gerd Srocke, a native of Kehmstedt . As soon as the necessary financial means are available, the north wall and the tower will also be plastered.
The St. Martin's Church belongs to the southern Harz parish .
