Johann Georg Leuckfeld (born July 4, 1668 in Heringen , † April 24, 1726 in Gröningen ) was a German theologian, writer, historian and collector of documents.

Life

Leuckfeld attended the schools in Stolberg , Frankenhausen and Quedlinburg . Then he studied theology in Leipzig . From an early age he was interested in local history and the acquisition and evaluation of historical documents. After graduating, he returned to Heringen and preached until he was 32 years old. His first book was published in Frankfurt in 1699. From 1700 he worked as secretary to the abbess of the Gandersheim monastery; at the same time he assumed the office of preacher. In 1702 he took over the position of senior pastor in Gröningen. In addition to this position, Leuckfeld worked as a chronicler, numismatist, biographer, bibliographer and genealogist. In his accompanying literary work he created an extensive work in which the biographies of Johann Spangenberg and Cyriakus Spangenberg as well as Michael Neander are the most important representations. Leuckfeld was in constant correspondence with over 200 contemporaries, including Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz , Ernst Salomon Cyprian and Christian Schlegel .

In addition, Leuckfeld became known to the educated public for finding and collecting medieval documents, letters and manuscripts believed to be lost. The most prominent find was the marriage certificate of Empress Theophanu found in Gandersheim Abbey in 1700 .

1710, Duke Anton Ulrich (Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel) appointed Leuckfeld to the monastery council; In 1712 he was accepted into the Prussian Academy of Sciences in Berlin.

He died on April 24, 1726, the grave is in the St. Martin Church in Gröningen.
