Christian Schlegel (* January 20 . Jul / the 30th January  1667 greg. In Saalfeld , † 17th October 1722 in Gotha ) was a historian, numismatist, librarian and writer in Thuringia.

Life

The son of the Lutheran theologian Johann Christian Schlegel (1635–1699) attended the Lyzeum zu Saalfeld / Saale until 1682 , which shared the premises in the former Franciscan monastery with the local mint. He then acquired his university entrance qualification at the Casimirianum Gymnasium in Coburg by 1688 . From 1688 to 1693 Schlegel studied at the theological faculty of the University of Jena . He was given special support by the history professor Caspar Sagittarius , in whose house he also enjoyed table and bed. Schlegel's master's degree was on the biography of the reformer Georg Spalatin .

As a candidate for theology, private scholar and private tutor in the family of the Electoral Saxon councilor, feudal and court secretary Magnus Lichtwer (1636–1710), he worked in Dresden from 1694 to 1700. Here he wrote life descriptions of the Dresden superintendents since the Reformation and numismatic writings. He organized the coin collection of the electoral Oberhofmarschall Friedrich Adolph von Haugwitz (1637–1705), which later formed the basis of the ducal coin cabinet in Weimar. He was already in contact in Dresden and corresponded with his friends Christian Juncker and Wilhelm Ernst Tentzel , whose numismatic writings Schlegel contributed to. As an art agent, he also acquired bracteates for Prince Anton Günther II of Schwarzburg-Sondershausen zu Arnstadt . In February 1700 Schlegel was appointed librarian and supervisor of the coin and medal cabinet from this enthusiastic collector.

At the court in Arnstadt , he was in charge of one of the largest numismatic collections of his time until 1712. In addition to research and development work in the coin and medal cabinet, Schlegel wrote about the medieval coin history of central German cities. The librarian and book collector corresponded with well-known researchers, authors, publishers, collectors and librarians. Among other things, purchase negotiations with Maria Sibylla Merian have come down to us. In Arnstadt he was on friendly terms with the local scholars Johann Christoph Olearius and Johann Gottfried Gregorii . He lived there as a contemporary of Johann Sebastian Bach , who, like Schlegel, was a former student of the former Saalfelder and later Eisenach rector Christian Zeidler (1643–1707).

Soon after the sale of the valuable Arnstadt coin and medal collection, her Schlegel followed on November 26, 1712 to the ducal court in Gotha . In the service of Duke Friedrich II of Saxe-Gotha and Altenburg , he was able to continue his work as one of the leading numismatists of the 18th century as librarian and supervisor of the coin cabinet at Schloss Friedenstein until his death on October 17th, 1722. The friendly collaboration with numerous scholars, for example with Ernst Salomon Cyprian and Johann Georg Leuckfeld , made him a valued specialist and contributor to important numismatic writings.

plant

Schlegel wrote some of the first publications on coins about mints in Arnstadt , Saalfeld, Coburg , Jena , Gotha , Bad Hersfeld , Eisenach , Merseburg , Mühlhausen , Nordhausen and Weissensee . As a biographer, he left numerous descriptions of the lives of important theologians of the Reformation period, of which the writings on Georg Spalatin and Caspar Aquila were considered standard works for a long time. In addition to a coin bible, Schlegel also wrote a treatise on the history of the Reformation in Coburg.

family

In Arnstadt Schlegel married the princely maid of honor Dorothea Sophia Westermann (1675–1706) on May 19, 1705, who died the following year after a miscarriage. His daughter Magdalena Augusta Schlegel (born 1716) emerged from his marriage to the ducal maid of honor Anna Margaretha Kern on April 25, 1713.

Honors

On November 30, 1712 he was accepted as a foreign member of the Royal Prussian Society of Sciences . On May 8, 1715, Duke Friedrich II appointed him historiographer of the ducal house of Saxe-Gotha and Altenburg by decree, in which he succeeded his deceased friend Christian Juncker .
