Johann Christoph Olearius (born September 17, 1668 in Halle (Saale) , † March 31, 1747 in Arnstadt ) was a German theologian , numismatist , hymnologist and historian .

Life

Johann Christoph Olearius was the son of the theologian Johann Gottfried Olearius (1635–1711) and his first wife Dorothea Malsius (1642–1679), his grandfather was the theologian and chronicler Gottfried Olearius . Olearius had received his first education privately and attended high school in his hometown Halle. From 1687 he began studying philosophical sciences at the University of Jena . He also attended lectures in the medical, legal and theological faculties. Above all in Caspar Sagittarius (historian) he had found a teacher, in whose house he was also accommodated and promoted.

In 1690 he defended his dissertation de collapsis muris Hierichuntinis ad Jus. VI. 20 and became a master of philosophy the following year . In 1693 Johann Christoph Olearius followed his father to Arnstadt, who was superintendent there. Because of his knowledge of numismatics, he made the acquaintance of Count Anton Günther II von Schwarzburg-Sondershausen , who owned a large coin collection. In 1694 he filled a free preacher position in Arnstadt; on a trip to Berlin before taking office, he met the diplomat Ezechiel Spanheim (1629-1710), the numismatist Lorenz Beger (1653-1705) and Philipp Jacob Spener (1635-1705). In 1695 he became a deacon in Arnstadt and took over the church library there as librarian. Johann Christoph Olearius, in consultation with his father and then superintendent in Arnstadt, designed a newly-improved Arnstadt hymn book , which appeared for the first time in 1701 and was printed in further editions until 1745 during his lifetime. He was able to call his hymn book new-improved , because 25 years earlier, i.e. in 1674 (VD17 3: 604642M), there had already been a hymn book called Arnstadtisch , to which he was unlikely to have connected in terms of content. In 1711 he rose to become the first deacon and in 1712 was archdeacon with a seat in the princely consistory. In 1714 he became a member of the Royal Prussian Academy of Sciences and in 1736 superintendent in Arnstadt.

Olearius was married twice. He had his first marriage on March 1, 1698 in Arnstadt with Elisabeth († September 7, 1713 in Arnstadt), the daughter of the Justice Council in Wiedenberg / Vogtl.
