from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Anton Günther II von Schwarzburg-Sondershausen zu Arnstadt (born October 10, 1653 in Sondershausen ; † December 20, 1716 in Arnstadt ) was Count and since 1697 Prince of Schwarzburg, Count of Hohnstein, Lord of Sondershausen, Arnstadt and Leutenberg.

Life

Anton Günther was a son of Count Anton Günther I von Schwarzburg-Sondershausen and his wife Maria Magdalena, née Countess Palatine zu Birkenfeld. In 1666 he succeeded his father together with his older brother Christian Wilhelm , but shared the land with him in 1681, with Anton Günther receiving the offices of Ebeleben , Schernberg , Keula and Arnstadt and thus establishing a new branch line. In 1697 the brothers were elevated to the rank of imperial prince, but Anton Günther only made use of this title in 1709. Admission to the Imperial Council of Dukes did not take place until 1754. The electoral and ducal house of Saxony caused this delay.

Anton Günther had his residential palace in Arnstadt extensively redesigned; He is considered a great patron of music and was an avid collector of antiques and art objects. The prince called the then 17-year-old Johann Sebastian Bach to his organist in Arnstadt, which developed into an important cultural center under the reign of Anton Günther.

From 1684 he was married to Auguste Dorothea (1666–1751), daughter of Duke Anton Ulrich von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel . The marriage remained childless and after the death of Anton Günther, Arnstadt fell back to his brother Christian Wilhelm von Schwarzburg-Sondershausen.
