Johann Gottfried Olearius (born September 28, 1635 in Halle (Saale) , † May 21, 1711 in Arnstadt ) was a German Protestant theologian and hymn poet.

Live and act

The eldest son of Gottfried Olearius (theologian, 1604) attended high school in his hometown and began studying at the University of Leipzig in the winter semester of 1652/53 . There he became a baccalaureus in the summer semester of 1654 and acquired the academic degree of a master's degree in philosophy on January 23, 1656 . He then went on an educational trip that took him to the universities of Strasbourg , Heidelberg , Marburg and, in 1658, to Jena .

Returning to Halle, he became adjunct at the market church of Our Dear Women in 1658 , a deacon there in 1662, pastor there in 1685 and at the same time inspector of the hall circle . In 1688 he followed a call as pastor and superintendent in Arnstadt, where he also became assessor at the consistory and Ephorus of the Arnstadt grammar school. In 1689 he became consistorial councilor. He went blind in old age.

As a Lutheran theologian, he mainly published pamphlets on contemporary debates and wrote devotional literature . He also appeared as the editor of hymn books and a chronicle for the city of Halle, as well as a hymn poet and botanist.

Olearius was married four times. His first marriage was in Halle on October 9, 1660 with Dorothea (* May 27, 1642 in Eisenach; † November 7, 1679 in Halle), the daughter of the Eisenach Chancellor Simon Malsius . His second marriage was also in Halle on September 7, 1680 with Eleonora Sophia (born November 13, 1648 in Halle, † November 19, 1688 in Arnstadt), the widow of Johann Nicolai († May 14, 1677 in Halle), who Daughter of the councilor and church leader at the Church of Our Lady Johann Stützing and his wife Helena von Ludwiger. His third marriage was in Arnstadt on November 26, 1689 with Anna Gertrud Poltz (born May 27, 1703 in Arnstadt), widow of the Magdeburg landscape taker Christian Lieder. Finally, on November 25, 1704, he concluded his fourth marriage in Arnstadt with Maria Magdalena Elisabeth Engelbrecht (* Halle; † 12, March 1721 in Arnstadt), the widow of the Jena physician Johann Philipp Sruve and widow of the magistrate of Stolberg-Hoym Johann Wilhelm .
