The church

The Protestant town church St. Georgii is in the town of Kelbra in the district of Mansfeld-Südharz in Saxony-Anhalt . It belongs to the parish area in Kelbra Kirchenkreis Eisleben-Sömmerda the Evangelical Church in Central Germany .

history

The town church of St. Georgii was the former monastery church of the Cistercian monastery Kelbra . After a fire in 1607, it was largely rebuilt. Its oldest parts date from the time the monastery was founded in the 13th century, because when the monastery was built, the donors , the Counts of Beichlingen , donated the church of St. Georgii and St. Martini to the citizens of Altendorf.

The oldest remains of the former monastery are the square church tower and the round arches in the nave . Part of the monastery cellar and remains of the wall are also still there.

Current condition

Nave

At the end of the 14th century, it was expanded into a hall church . In the second half of the 16th century, the church was converted into a town church and the current appearance was created through further building measures. A big fire in 1607 also damaged the town church.

The nave is as follows:

  • The altar is made of sandstone . An oil painting by Christian Richter highlights its importance with biblical images.
  • The pulpit with its basket and its goblet-shaped substructure fills the room with a festive atmosphere.
  • The lectern made of alabaster and profiled base ledge gives further spiritual impulses.
  • The former three-sided double galleries with painted fields and the aristocratic galleries fill the room.
  • In 1911 the church got central heating . Two graves were found during the construction work.

Steeple

Leading to the church tower portal is through the bellows of the organ installed. In 1840 the tower was repaired and a new button with a weather vane was installed. There is currently a bronze bell from 1869 and a steel bell from 1955 on the tower. In 1956 the tower roof was repaired, whereby the documents from the tower button of bygone times were emptied and supplemented again.

Klosterlinde

The monastery linden tree stands on the church square, the former monastery cemetery , and was probably planted in 1251.
