The Cistercian convent Kelbra was a nunnery of the Cistercian women in Kelbra (Kyffhäuser) , district of Mansfeld-Südharz in Saxony-Anhalt from 1251 to 1551 .

history

Count Heinrich III. von Beichlingen-Rothenburg founded the nunnery in Kelbra (formerly also: Chelbra or Kälbra ) in 1251 . In 1525 the Cistercian women were chased away by the rebellious peasants under the leadership of Thomas Müntzer , but were able to return for the time being. It was not until 1551 that the monastery was dissolved in the course of the Reformation . The monastery church of St. Georgii was rebuilt after a fire in 1607. From the old monastery only remains of the wall are left.
