St. Martini

The Protestant village church of St. Martini is in the Altendorf district of the town of Kelbra in the Mansfeld-Südharz district in Saxony-Anhalt .

history

The church in the former village of Altendorf was probably built in the 11th century as a Romanesque fortified church. It is said to be one of the oldest churches in the Kyffhäuser area . The church was first mentioned in 1093 and first mentioned in a document in 1251. Early Romanesque remains prove the age. In 1357 and later, the church was significantly rebuilt according to changed conditions. On July 8, 1357, Bishop Albertus consecrated the altar of the Martini Church.

In 1745, when the altar was being laid, an ivory- lined box was found on which the alteration of the altar in 1357 was reported. Other finds were recovered.

architecture

The church tower has a pyramid roof with a tower clock each . The open lantern is octagonal. There is a pointed helmet on the lantern . In the tower there is a cross vault with Romanesque arched windows . The nave on the west side has similar, but walled-up windows . Small pointed arch windows are let into the south side. Probably the oldest baptismal font in the Kyffhäuser area is goblet-shaped.

Bells

The church used to have two bells . The large one was cast in Nordhausen . The unmarked little one was the older one. Both bells were melted down during the First World War . Steel bells were supplied as replacements after the war, but their sound was good.

graveyard

The Altendorfer Friedhof was expanded in 1867.
