The Weseraue nature reserve , with around 770  hectares, is the second largest nature reserve in the Minden-Lübbecke district . It is listed under the designation MI-002.

location

From the Weser bridge in Petershagen, it stretches 24 kilometers to the state border with Lower Saxony near Schlüsselburg and includes the area of ​​the Weser floodplain . It also includes a section of the Gehlen lowlands in the area where it flows into the Weser. The entire nature reserve is in the area of ​​the city of Petershagen .

The nature reserve barrage Schlüsselburg interrupts the natural reserve Weseraue, located both south and north of it. The Weseraue surrounds or borders the nature reserves Windheimer Marsch , Häverner Marsch , Baltus pit , Mittelweser and the Schlüsselburg barrage.

The Weseraue gains importance through its year-round function as a breeding, resting, moulting and wintering place. Among the encountered here waterfowl populations which includes Sandpiper , the Common Goldeneye and the Tundra Swan . As an outstanding part of the EU bird sanctuary " Weseraue ", the Weseraue is a habitat for the lapwing , the bean goose , the white- fronted goose and the whooper swan as well as the wood sandpiper.

The Weseraue represents an important networking element for the above-mentioned nature reserves. The habitats typical of the meadows, such as meadows and pastures, alluvial bushes and small bodies of water, contribute to this. In addition, there are several former gravel excavations in the nature reserve.

The nature reserve is also part of the "wetland of international importance Weserstauufe Schluesselburg" which is to be specially protected and developed according to the Ramsar Convention . In terms of ornithological importance, the Weseraue is networked with the protected areas in the Dümmers and Steinhuder Meer areas as defined by Natura 2000 .
