The Windheimer Marsch nature reserve is around 90 hectares in size. It is located on the right side of the Weser in the natural area of ​​the Weser Valley west of the Windheim district of the city of Petershagen , is part of the EC bird sanctuary " Weseraue " and is listed under the name MI-068. As a part of this bird sanctuary, the Windheimer Marsch is part of the Natura 2000 network of special protected areas .

The six still waters created by gravel excavation characterize the nature reserve through near-natural bank structures with flat banks, peninsulas and reed beds . In the northern area there are extensively used grassland and bushes. Several small bodies of water complement the biotope mosaic .

The Windheimer Marsch gains importance through its year-round function as a breeding, resting, moulting and wintering place. The waders and water birds that can be found here include the little ringed plover , the common tern , the bean goose and the goosander . Many of the bird species living here are on the red list of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia .

The white storks that breed in the vicinity of the area are a specialty for Ostwestfalen-Lippe .
