Together with the Espelkamp forests ( Kleihügel , Gabelhorst), the Lever Wald, the Osterwald, the Pohlschen Heide , the Mindener Wald , the Heisterholz forms a not completely closed, but significant forest belt, which connects the northern Minden-Lübbecker Land along the L770 road runs through a length of 31 kilometers and continues in the Schaumburg Forest .

meaning

The Heisterholz is located in the natural area of the Rahden-Diepenauer Geest and forms one of the largest closed forest areas with a high proportion of old trees. The protection is intended to secure the old oak forests on sandy soils and the pedunculate oak - hornbeam forests and the birch - pedunculate oak forests as a habitat for animals and plants that have been specially adapted to these location conditions within the extensive forest complex . Near-natural spring areas, brook valleys and swamps offer refuges for numerous plants and animals.

Alder forests , ash - alder forests , spring areas, reed beds and sedge beds are particularly to be protected . The main target species in the area are the medium-sized woodpecker and black woodpecker , as well as the crested newt . The area is a stepping stone biotope to the nearby Minden forest. The NSG Heisterholz is shown in the state development plan for North Rhine-Westphalia and in the area development plan as an area of state-wide importance within the biotope network . The closed forest area is owned by the State of North Rhine-Westphalia.

useful information

The Heisterholz is the namesake for the former clay industry Heisterholz, which mainly produced bricks and roofing panels. The floor mosaic of the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church was also their product.
