The location of Uthleben has been inhabited continuously from the Neolithic to the Germanic times. A knight family of the same name "von Uthleben" came from the place. Later various noble families such as von Bendeleben , von Byla , von Rosenau , von Schlotheim and von Sundhausen were wealthy here.

During the construction of the neighboring high-pressure gas pipeline, a hoard of jewelry from the late Bronze Age , a Celtic gold coin and a Roman silver denarius were unearthed.

On May 31, 1906, the place was hit by a very severe tornado of magnitude F3 – F4.

On December 1, 2010, the city of Heringen / Helme and the communities of Auleben , Hamma , Uthleben and Windehausen merged to form the rural community of Heringen / Helme.
