Christian Gotthard Kettembeil (* 1773 in Heringen ; † October 4, 1850 ) was a German businessman and theater operator.

Life

Christian Gotthard Kettembeil was born as the son of Heinrich Gotthard August Kettembeil (1735–1796), the then lawyer and mayor of Heringen, his brother was the judge and newspaper editor Andreas Ludwig Christoph Kettembeil .

In 1817 he built a theater in Nordhausen at his own expense , with an inn in front of it, the "Berliner Hof". A spacious half-timbered house with a generous stage of around 11 by 12 meters was built for this theater. The theater, which opened on June 24, 1818, was later called the "Berliner Hof-Theater". In the theater, which could hold up to 600 people, the first theatrical performance took place on August 16, 1818; operas, plays and concerts were given there. The Sondershausen Court Acting Society and the Erfurt-Rudolstädtische Theatergesellschaft performed particularly often. The theater also served as a model for the theater in Sondershausen , built in 1825 , which Prince Günther Friedrich Carl I had built. In 1843 Christian Gotthard Kettembeil sold the theater to the merchant August Schreiber.

At that time the "Berliner Hof" was also the seat of the casino company and the "Harmonie-Gesellschaft", which shaped the cultural life in Nordhausen.

In 1826 he bought a garden on the Petersberg from the wine merchant August Friedrich Blödau. There he set up a social and coffee house, the "Bellevue". In this garden he also ran a flower and cactus cultivation, so he is said to have grown a new species of cactus, which he called Kettembeilii cactus. He ran a bees and silkworms there and wrote instructions for this.

In 1839 he bought a porcelain factory in Aschersleben and in 1841 he took over the breweries in Nordhausen "auf dem Hagen" and in "Domstraße".

In 1846, Christian Gotthard Kettembeil was still mentioned in the Nordhauser address book as the operator of a wadding factory.

He was since 1801 with Johanna Sophie-Conradine (* June 20, 1778, † December 11, 1850), b. Sickel married.
