The Faro airport ( port. : Aeroporto de Faro ) is an international commercial airport in the south of Portugal , of the ANA Aeroportos de Portugal is operated. It is the third largest commercial airport in the country after the airports of Lisbon and Porto and as the “gateway to the Algarve ” an important location factor for tourism. The passenger volume consists predominantly of holidaymakers who used to travel mainly with charter airlines . Since the liberalization of European air traffic and the turn of the millennium, low-cost airlines such as Easyjet or Ryanair have taken on this role. In addition, TAP Portugal and other European scheduled airlines offer scheduled connections. Since October 2015, the airport's terminal building has been renovated and expanded in order to increase the capacity from 6 million passengers to up to 8 million guests per year. This work should be completed in spring 2017. The airport is located 3 km west of Faro within sight of the Atlantic coast .

Incidents
On December 21, 1992 a McDonnell Douglas DC-10 of the Dutch charter airline Martinair had an accident while landing in Faro. On its final approach to runway 11 (now runway 10), the aircraft got into a wind shear . 56 inmates died in the accident and another 106 were seriously injured.
