The Santa Maria Airport ( Portuguese Aeroporto de Santa Maria ) is an airport on the Azores island of Santa Maria , near the town of Vila do Porto . It was initially used as a military base by the United States Army Air Forces and was given to Portugal after World War II . From August 5, 1947, the forerunner of SATA Air Açores started flying to other airports in the Azores.
Incidents
- On October 28, 1949, a Lockheed L-749 Constellation of Air France ( F-BAZN ) was flown on the Azores island of São Miguel in the approach to the Santa Maria airport in the Monte Redondo mountain. The machine was on the flight from Paris to New York . All 48 people on board were killed (see Air France flight 009 ) .
