The Aeroporto do Porto Santo is a Portuguese airport on the Madeira archipelago belonging Atlantic island of Porto Santo . It shares the infrastructure with the base Aeródromo de Manobra n.º 3 (AM3) of the Portuguese Air Force (Força Aérea Portuguesa).

history

The decision to build the first Porto Santo airport dates back to 1959 and was strongly supported by NATO . When it opened in 1960, the runway was 2,000 meters long. The first flight on July 20, 1960 was carried out by Transportes Aéreos Portugueses (TAP) with a DC-4 .

Until the opening of the extended runway at Funchal Airport in 2000, Porto Santos Airport served as a stopover for night refueling of aircraft that had recently taken off there. Due to the weight restriction associated with the short runway there, many destinations could not be approached non-stop with the maximum permitted fuel quantity.

Over the years, the runway was first extended to 2,440 meters and later to 3,000 meters, and several work was carried out on the equipment and the aprons of the airport. In 1995, a new terminal was also inaugurated.

Civil use

From there the airlines Aero VIP and TAP Portugal , Thomson Airways serve the airports of Funchal , Lisbon and Porto as well as the airport London-Gatwick . From Germany, Porto Santo will only be served by Eurowings from Cologne / Bonn Airport in winter 2019/20 .

Military use

Squadrons 751 (helicopter rescue) and 502 (maritime surveillance) of the Força Aérea Portuguesa operate from the military part.
