The Espinho airfield (in Portuguese Aeródromo de Espinho ) is a regional special airfield in Paramos south of Espinho . The square belongs to the Aveiro district , the Região Norte in the Grande Porto sub-region in Portugal .

The airfield is mainly used by sport and private aircraft. At three meters above sea level, the airfield is comparatively low and the runway ends on the beach. A road leads across the runway to the beach. Traffic is warned of the air traffic with traffic signs .

history

The base 1ª Escola de Aviação Civil do Norte was opened for military aviation in 1931 with a runway length 08/16 of 1500 meters and was the military training airfield of the Grupo de Aviação de Caça, which later became the Aeródromo Militar de Ovar, about 3 kilometers south was relocated. "Campo Militar de Espinho" has been closed. In 1976 a barracks was built for the Regimento de Engenharia de Espinho Nº 3 and the hangars, tank farms and buildings were converted for further use. The original 1,500 meter long runway was divided and used for general aviation, with the exception of scheduled and charter traffic, as an uncontrolled airfield with now two shortened runways, as the lake-side access to the barracks was built in the middle of the runway .

incident

On June 26, 2005 there was an accident between a Piper PA-28 Cherokee small aircraft and a car on the airfield while landing . The driver of the car was killed and the pilot was recovered seriously injured. The collision occurred outside of the approved area for landing and take-off. According to the investigations by the responsible aviation authority INAC, the pilot did not have the full original runway length of 1500 meters, but only the 490 meters granted by special permit. Beyond this distance there is a safety zone with 110 meters, which corresponds to a percentage of 3% for rates of climb and descent and was still sufficiently far away from the crossing road. According to the INAC report, it was both a pilot's error and an inattention on the part of the driver who had not heeded the traffic signs. Since the airfield is an uncontrolled place, there was also no radio contact at the time of the approach. Due to the incident, flight operations were suspended in 2005.

The two designated short lanes 08 and 16 in front of the “Rua da Praia” street are only permitted for ultralight aircraft and model aircraft until further notice (as of 2006). Certification according to the rules of the ICAO is currently still pending, as this does not provide for flight operations for an uncontrolled airfield that crosses a public road, so approval is not expected anytime soon.
