A scheduled flight is the offer of an air transport company to provide a transport service at certain times, which are stored in a flight plan, regardless of the actual load. In contrast to charter, scheduled flights are operated as scheduled flights.

These can then be booked for people ( passengers ) or goods ( freight ) under certain conditions . Scheduled flights are the norm in commercial air traffic . In contrast to charter flights , the transport company takes on the economic risk here. In addition, in tourist traffic , with the exception of some low cost airlines , mostly, and especially on medium and long distances several cabin classes offered.

Operation of scheduled flights

From February 1919 the Lignes Aériennes Farman set up the first international scheduled connection with a Farman F.60 "Goliath" between Toussus-le-Noble near Paris and the Royal Air Force Station Kenley near London

The first international scheduled flight was carried out on February 8, 1919 by the Lignes Aériennes Farman on the route from Toussus-le-Noble near Paris to the Royal Air Force Station Kenley near London with a Farman F.60 "Goliath". Other international scheduled flights were offered by others in the same year; for example from August 25, 1919 by Aircraft Transport & Travel on the route from Hounslow Heath near London to Paris-Le Bourget with a DH16 .

Shortest scheduled flight

The shortest scheduled flight worldwide is offered by Loganair with Britten-Norman BN-2 Islander and takes two minutes over 2.8 kilometers from Westray to Papa Westray within the Scottish Orkney Islands .

Shortest international scheduled flight

The shortest international scheduled flight connected the St. Gallen-Altenrhein airport in Switzerland with the German Friedrichshafen airport , with two Embraer ERJ 145 aircraft flying daily on the 20 km long route since November 2, 2016 . On April 16, 2017, the airline People's Viennaline will be closing  the controversial connection, which only lasts eight minutes. Prior to May 2018 and was flight from Anguilla to St. Maarten the Anguilla Air Services , the shortest international scheduled flights with a flight time of about 10 minutes. Since May 18, 2018, Aruba Airlines has offered the shortest international scheduled flight with the flight from Aruba to Punto Fijo in Venezuela . It lasts eight minutes.

Longest scheduled flight

The longest scheduled flights can be found in the following table. As early as 2007, forbes.com noted that the number of extremely long long-haul connections (without stopovers) is increasing, e.g. B. that of the scheduled flight between Hong Kong and the USA or Canada, from 866 in July 2001 to 1000 in July 2007. If the maximum range of an aircraft is used, less cargo and passengers can be carried due to the high fuel mass. A stopover allows passengers to be dropped off and others picked up, but it costs time, increases the weather risk and increases the effort involved in landing and take-off as well as landing fees.

In 2012, around 2.49 billion air passengers were carried around the world, most frequently in or from Asia (724 million), followed by Europe (680 million) and North America (597 million passengers). Of the ten most frequently flown routes, seven are also in Asia; in 2012 the busiest route with around 10.16 million passengers was the Jeju – Seoul route in South Korea .

The high subsonic speed of about Mach 0.8-0.9 in the upper troposphere to the lower stratosphere has established itself as the cruising speed of large line jets . This somewhat reduces the effects of the weather, particularly turbulence, thunderstorms and the risk of icing. However, ascent and descent take place within the lower troposphere. In unsuitable weather, shifts and diversions are sometimes necessary.

Supersonic flights, such as the Concorde between Paris and the USA, were unable to establish themselves due to the high price and were essentially discontinued after a crash .

The price of a scheduled flight on a particular flight connection can vary widely. Airlines offer different services, more or less dense seating, different transport classes and seat types, additional services (hand luggage and luggage, drinks, food, folding armrest, blanket, video screen on the front seat, cinema screen, plug for charger for laptop, mobile phone and internet connection). Depending on the market situation, point of sale, season of the year, time of booking, right to postpone and cancellation modalities, very different prices are charged. Laker Airways offered cheap flights between London and New York for the first time in 1977; in the cheapest "stand-by" variant, passengers sometimes had to wait for a plane with free space.
