history

Rear of the fortress Forte de São Luís de Almádena

Finds prove a prehistoric settlement, in particular the important archaeological site from the Paleolithic in Vale de Boi and the Bronze Age tomb in Figueira.

A villa from Roman times was found here on Boca do Rio Beach .

Today's place was first mentioned in the 16th century as an up-and-coming fishing village. Increasing pirate attacks made it necessary to build defensive structures. The other places in the municipality were created at the same time, with the exception of Figueira, which was mentioned as early as 1374.

In 1925, some municipal areas were spun off from Budens and have since formed the independent municipality of Barão de São Miguel .
