One of the first mentions of Thingers as Tegans took place in 1394, when in the Salbuch of the prince monastery Kempten that was arranged by the prince abbot Friedrich von Hirschdorf . The aim of this book was to record all credits that had to flow to the prince monastery in the form of a levy. In this case a degan or tegan was obliged to pay taxes.

In the following years there were numerous different spellings; In 1451 a Töngast, in 1463 a Tegers, 1526 Tagers and 1533 Tingers was named. Dingarz was mentioned in 1734.

In 1818 Thingers was added to the new parish of Sankt Lorenz ; this was one part of the main team Mariaberg , the other part to Hofammannschaft . Thingers I temporarily became Heggers or Lämmlings, Thingers II was understood as Prestlings.

On April 1, 1935, Thingers and many other places were reclassified to Kempten. From the 1960s onwards, Thingers was planned to become an area with a fast construction pace and a high construction density. In 1961, according to a census, there were less than 100 inhabitants in Thingers I and II. In 1973 there were almost 4,000 apartments in the Thingers area, including the areas of the neighboring districts of Lotterberg and Halden . In 1975 a shopping center was opened for the district to ensure local supplies. The rapid population growth therefore also required the construction of new churches, in 1971 a rectory with a kindergarten was opened, and in 1967 the associated St. Mark's Church was inaugurated. Other churches in the area were the Michaelskirche , built in the 1960s, and the Hedwig's Church, completed in 1986 .

In Thingers there is a particularly high concentration of foreign citizens compared to the urban average, which also resulted in conflicts among each other and discharged. The majority of Russians and Turks among foreign citizens is particularly striking. In the 1990s in particular, there was a gang war between the two groups in Thingers , which had given the district a lasting bad reputation.

Culture and public institutions

In Thingers there are several churches and kindergartens, the Astrid Lindgren School for physically and motor impaired people and the North School as an elementary school.

In order to accelerate the will of the foreign population to integrate, citizens joined together in the Ikarus Thingers eV . He undertakes cultural, sport and integration events in Thingers. The Stadtjugendring Kempten set up its own youth center for Thingers in 1995. Thingers has had its own district office since 2003.
