Kargen is a hamlet and part of the independent city of Kempten (Allgäu) .

Originally the small place was called "Im Buech" or "Busch". Kargen (Hof des Karg) was added later. Both names were used until the 17th century.

In 1444 the place belonged to Wagegg . In 1526 it was called Kargen.

In 1818, Kargen was added to the newly formed community of Sankt Mang ; one year later, statistics with four residential buildings and 19 residents are handed down. In 1900 22 people lived in the 4 properties. By 1954, the number of inhabitants in the wilderness fell to 14.

In 1972 Kargen was reclassified to Kempten as part of the rural community of Sankt Mang. In 1987, a total of 19 residents lived in the Kargen, now known as a hamlet .

With effect from October 15, 1981, Kargen was expanded about 200 meters to the west by removing the officially named part of the municipality Tannach and assigned it as house number 6 to the Kargen part of the municipality. This should avoid confusion with another hamlet in the city of Kempten, which was expanded in 1972, namely Tannach, the former municipality of St. Lorenz .
